UPDATE: CLUB AND INTERCLUB PURSUIT EVENTS

Date Posted: May 13, 2013

First Interclub pursuit - Sunday May 5, 10:00am start - Oro course results posted

First club pursuit - Saturday, May 11, 10:00am start - Bradford South course results posted

Second club pursuit - Saturday, June 1, 10:00am start - Sandford course (see Calendar page for map)

Second Interclub pursuit - Sunday May 26, 10:00am start - Beeton course (see Calendar page for map).

The events in both of the these series are open to and can be enjoyed by all, because they are ability-handicapped, usually in a way that ensures elite riders never win. This format is technically called an Australian Pursuit - and is designed to bring out the best in all of us, in terms of collaboration, competitiveness, and duplicity.

In the Club Series there are medals for the winner of the individual  events and a trophy for the overall winner presented at the Annual Awards Banquet.
In the Interclub Series, there are prizes (cycling gear) for the overall winner and the next 15-20 participants in the Interclub Series.

Your obligations:
- Bring in exact change so that you don’t slow down the registration line while our Race Secretary fumbles in his wallet.
- Do not arrive at 9:55 am and expect to ride. Get there early so registration does not become a shambles with resulting distress to our Race Secretary.
- It would be really nice if the corners could be swept by more than the "faithful few" (FOR ONCE!). Bring a broom, get out of bed a little earlier and choose a corner to sweep.

REMEMBER: For both these series - NO MEMBERSHIP CARD - NO RIDE

RULES, RULES, RULES: The following are displayed at both Club and  Interclub events and you are required to sign-in before each event indicating that you have read, understand and agree with these rules

NECC: PRE-EVENT INSTRUCTIONS FOR CLUB AND INTERCLUB PURSUITS (version: 28 April, 2010; amended 20 April, 2012).

- This event is registered with the OCA but it is not sanctioned and is not subject to an OCA Event Permit.
- It is covered under the provisions of the OCA insurance policy, provided that you are a member of NECC (or for Interclubs, that every  participant is a member of the Newmarket, Barrie, Mountain View or Owen Sound Cycling Clubs).
- Only you are responsible for your safety - as stated in the OCA waiver you signed when joining the club.
- The roads are totally open to traffic and there may, or may not, be people assisting at intersections to inform you of oncoming traffic.
- Intersections are neutralized. You have to proceed through intersections with regard to the rules of the road and give way to  traffic with the right of way.
- You must not cross the yellow centre line or obstruct traffic.
- You may ride competitively but not aggressively.
- If someone in your group crashes you should stop and give assistance and be prepared to give a witness statement for reporting to the OCA.
- If you drop out of the event you must inform the timekeeper.

THE LONG DARKE KNIGHT OF THE SOLE IS ALMOST OVER

Date Posted: May 1, 2013

Don’t be caught jousting flat-footed, the Thursday Ride will return next week - Thursday May 2 (NO, NOT TOMORROW)

The instructions are as they were last year but on no account is that justification for not reading them NOW.

DO not whine about the length of the message. It’s crammed with important information, so it is mandatory reading even if you do not ride on Thursdays.

Andrew.

This club ride is registered on our OCA Affiliation form and is subject to our Membership, Insurance and Participation Policy (see the website: http://www.newmarketeagles.com/PDFs/Insurance_policy_2010.pdf).

This is a fast paced training ride but it is designed so that riders of varying ability levels can enjoy participating:
1. The route is the same from week to week. This means that people can join the ride en route.
2. The route incorporates a loop so that those who get dropped have an opportunity to re-join the ride. Depending on the month, we do between 1 and 4 loops, so be aware of the amount of daylight remaining and have lights with you.
3. It seems advisable to no longer use Warden Ave because of the increased traffic levels during commuting hours (measured at 160 vehicles per hour going north and 32 per hour going south).
4. The CURRENT ROUTE is: east on Mulock, north on McCowan, west on Queensville, north on Kennedy, east on Holborn, south on McCowan  and then repeat the Queensville-Kennedy-Holborn-McCowan loop until exhausted or day light fails - and in case it does, be sure to have lights with you.
5. The ride takes place whenever people show up and decide to ride - there is no process for an “official cancellation”.

For those who need to drive to a meeting point, the usual parking spot is on the street at 1133 Kingdale Rd Newmarket (lots of space on the street)* (*Note that returning to Kingdale, off Mulock, can be tricky because Mulock is 4 lanes. An alternative is to turn north on Harry Walker Pkwy before crossing Mulock).

Faster riders leave this parking point at 6:30 PM, SHARP. Slower riders leave at 6:20 PM SHARP and expect to be caught by the fast group while heading north on McCowan. They then try to hang on to the fast guys before re-grouping on the loop (sounds more complicated than it is).

REMEMBER: - NO MATTER WHERE YOU JOIN THE RIDE, EVERYONE NEEDS TO HAVE A MEMBERSHIP CARD. - IT’S GOOD TO RIDE RAPIDLY BUT IT MUST BE RESPONSIBLY. - THE RIDE MAY INVOLVE A ROTATING PACELINE (if in doubt, watch this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mhI8gWurWNQ). - READ THE GROUP RIDING ADVISORY that follows:

GROUP RIDE SAFETY

- The apparent safety of riding as a “tight” double file group is just that – apparent – and is no protection from the actions of a rogue driver.
- All GROUPS need to have a process for keeping in a tight, orderly group and establishing when they should be in single file – for example: on winding roads; roads with disappeared shoulders; roads with limited visibility on hills; where there are double yellow lines; etc.
- EVERYONE in the group needs to STEP UP, SPEAK OUT and be responsible for the group’s behaviour.
- Those at the front need to TAKE RESPONSIBILITY for calling SINGLE-UP when road conditions dictate and BREAKING UP THE GROUP when it is too long for the road conditions (or even pulling to the side, if traffic is being obstructed).
- Those behind need to FOLLOW the instructions of the lead rider.
- Those at the back need to warn of vehicles that cannot get past and CALL FOR A SINGLE-UP when needed.
- EVERYONE in the group needs to CALL THE MESSAGES UP THE LINE  and EVERYONE needs to move over in an orderly fashion.
- Those at the back need to be aware of riders being dropped, crashed or with a mechanical.
- ROTATIONS should be SINGLE (i.e. the passing pair of riders should not ride between the two front riders).

THE NEW SEASON IS IMMINENT: MEMBERSHIPS, INSURANCE, PURSUIT EVENTS and GROUP RIDES

Date Posted: March 5, 2013

YES I KNOW THIS IS VERBOSE BUT IT IS A MUST READ

1. MEMBERSHIP AND INSURANCE UPDATE - 2013

Membership applications will ONLY be processed this year through the on-line registration system accessed on the website membership page.

Participation in ANY NECC event/regular ride is open ONLY to members who have registered for their 2013 membership.

Participation of non-members can lead to an insurance and liability risk for all. Please DO NOT cause me anxiety and you embarrassment by turning up for one of the regular group rides without having joined the Club. You may not have received your card yet but I will know if you have joined or not.

Since a number of members may choose to gather from time to time at our usual ride meeting places in the early season, before everyone has got their membership act together, please be aware that insurance coverage through the OCA cannot be assumed to be in place when riding together under these conditions.

2. PURSUITS

The Race Schedule for Club and Interclub Races and Time Trials is finalized and posted on the website calendar page. Announcements about other competitive and non-competitive events of possible interest to members will be issued through the Google Newsgroup and on the website.

3. GROUP RIDES

Below is the message issued last year concerning our group rides, Saturdays in particular. PLEASE RE-READ IT.

ALSO, please read this new article, 10 Rules to Group Ride Like a Pro (PDF) (this is also available in the right hand column of the membership page).

NECC GROUP RIDES

In recent years, we have taken a number of steps to improve the Clubs GROUP RIDING PRACTICES (e.g. distribution of these articles: http://carolinacyclingnews.com/2011/09/0/lost-art-of-the-group-ride/ ; http://michaelbarry.ca/2011/11/the-group-ride-2/; and the recent efforts by designated ride leaders in the Saturday Intermediate Group).

This has generated a lot of discussion which, together with the ever increasing numbers in our rides, has led to a decision to take additional steps to improve the quality and safety of our group rides.
Please note the following principles and practices (which will also be posted on the Membership Page of the website):

1. Participants in our GROUP RIDES do so at their own risk and it is the responsibility of all riders to act in the best interests of their safety and that of other members of the group.
2. For some rides (Sunday and Wednesday evening) there are people responsible for scheduling and route planning who may also provide advice on ride practices.
3. For the other rides (Saturday, Thursday, Wednesday afternoon/GOOFS) there are no designated leaders responsible for “leading” the ride. The club is only responsible for setting the time and meeting place and relies on the individual participants to “manage themselves” in accordance with accepted safe riding practices.
4. In the interests of taking further action to improve our risk management practices and to improve the quality and safety of our rides, a number of members have agreed to act as “monitors” during our rides, to identify and comment on poor and unsafe riding practices.
5. It may be the case (for example on days when we also have a scheduled Pursuit event or Time-trial) that no monitors are present at a particular ride. The ride may still proceed but as always, the individual participants are responsible for the group’s safe riding practices.
6. When present, the “Ride Monitors” will do the following:

At the start of the ride:
Do a headcount and make sure the groups sizes are reasonable (e.g. establishing “a” and “b” groups when necessary)
Make sure the discussion of route for the day is not endless.
Give one-on-one advice to new and/or inexperienced members (at the start and during the ride)

During the ride, watch out for and comment on such bad practices as:
Lack of attention to stop signs and lights and yellow lines
The group not keeping a tight formation and half-wheeling
Failure to signal turns and obstacles
Not calling for a single-up when road and traffic conditions require
Lack of communication - not calling out “clear” and “car back”
Not allowing adequate time for the whole group to clear intersections
Erratic changes of pace
Failure to watch out for riders left behind at intersections, or because of mechanicals or crashes; or simply struggling with the pace and needing just a brief breather to get back with the group

7. It is hoped that you as members will heed their comments and accept them in the spirit in which they are offered. Cycling can be a high pressure/speed sport. Sometimes there is not time to be overly polite when trying to correct individual or group riding problems.
8. Here are the names of some of the long term club members with extensive group riding and racing experience who have offered to step up and speak out during our rides, in the interest of the safety of us all. Please make sure you get to know who they are: Big John Vanden Elzen, Simon MacDonald, Karl Pasternak, Matthias Schmidt, George Vandikas, Ian Seaton, Victor Tolgyessy, Andrew Darke, Dave Hammond, Dean Robertson

Thanks,
Andrew

Domestiques and Donations Wanted

The 7th annual Tour de Speed youth race is coming on June 15th. The Community Centre is booked, the roads are secured and all the support services are in place. The only thing missing (besides the riders) is YOU! If you’ve helped out before you know how much fun it is and how much the kids enjoy the day.

If you are able to help out, whether it’s only for an hour or for the whole day, please send me an e‑mail at tourofspeed@rogers.com.  Include your name, your availability and what you would like to do. If you volunteered last year, I sincerely hope you will be back this year, particularly in the key knowledge and team captain positions.

We are looking for contributions of items for:
• Fund raising raffles - preferably cycling related including gear, clothing, food, equipment;
• Swag bags - also preferably cycling related;
• Canteen - coffee, milk, soft-drinks, cookies, muffins;
• Post-race recovery - e.g. water, fruit, chocolate milk, gels, powders, bars;
• BBQ lunch items - patties, buns, water, soft drinks, cookies, coffee, vegetables and fruit.
The Tour de Speed is recognized as the premiere youth race in Ontario. This level of recognition is only possible because club members like you step up to help. Your assistance will enable us to continue our support of youth cycling in York Region.

NEWMARKET EAGLES RACE TEAM - Ramping up for 2013!

Date Posted: December 4, 2012

The Youth and Adult RaceTeam has now secured a number of commercial sponsorships and is getting ready for the first race day in 2013.

This is an exciting new venture for a  club that has always (since 1985!) regarded its primary goal as providing opportunities for “grass roots racing”.
By establishing a Race Team we hope to provide a pathway for our members, young and old, to move up to a higher level of racing.

Here’s what you can do:

1. If you have been thinking about joining the Race Team, now is the time to do it so you can get your team clothing kit ordered. The Team is open to all members of the Eagles.  If you still have questions before you join see the attached "Race Team FAQ sheet." (PDF)

2. See the attached “Hello Eagles” Information Sheet (PDF) regarding our current sponsors and how we plan to use these funds.

3. Use the attached “Team Sponsorship” sheet (PDF) to solicit sponsorships from the company you work for or others that may have an interest.

4. For any questions about the Race Team, contact Chris Raynor, Dan Lundenberg, Ralph Neumann
