SPECIAL SATURDAY MORNING RIDE - AUGUST 22, 2009

Date Posted: July 2/09

Is your inventory of life experiences missing a participation in the world famous Bradford Carrot Festival?
Yes, I thought so - therefore, pay careful heed to the message below from one of our new Eagles members.

The club's regular Saturday morning ride on August 22 will start at the usual place but slighly earlier at 8:00AM. It will then proceed to the start of the Ride for Mercy (no, this does not mean a hammerfest) at the Danube Centre, 715 Simcoe Rd, Bradford. It will then complete the 70km version of the RIDE FOR MERCY, returning to Bradford for a free lunch at the Danube Centre.

If you want to particpate you must register on-line in advance and pay $25.00. If you can raise additional funds for Mercy House (a Bradford women's shelter), using the pledge sheet, even better. CLICK HERE

We hope that as many of our regular Saturday morning riders (and many more!) will particpate in this event in support of this local and worthwhile cause and in celebration of the glorious tap root.

POINTS STANDINGS AFTER RACE #3

Date Posted: June 29/09

The points standings for both the club and interclub series have been posted.

CLUB RACE #3 - SANFORD - RESULTS

Date Posted: June 28/09

Our third race of the season was held under some fabulous weather. We set a new participation record with 53 riders who were split into six groups.

Every group decided that they were going to make a mess out of the projected splits and rode noticibly faster than predicted. This resulted in groups 2,3,4A,4B and 5 being together at the end of the third lap. Group 1 was caught half way through the final lap so there was a big group at the bottom of the zephyr hill where of course everything started to shatter. Group 5 dominated that last 1/4 lap and captured the first 10 spots.

First place went to Matthias Schmidt, second was Dave Pierce and rounding out the top three was Neil Hendry.

Thanks to Al Norley and Bob Spencer for officiating

KENNEDY 40K TT - RESULTS

Date Posted: June 24/09

Hot, Humid near perfect evening for our 40k warmup for the Club Championship. We had 34 individuals and 1 pair start the course.

Fastest individual time went to Rob Nishman @ 58:02, second was Dean Wright @ 58:09 and third went to Glen McCrone @ 58:45.

The fastest time of the evening went to the pair of Ed Veal and Dave Viney. After flatting in the 40k two-up two weeks ago they decided to have another go at the course record of just over 53 minutes.

Well, their time of 50:17 @ an avg speed of almost 48 kph smashed the previous record. These two now own all the course records between them.

Thanks to Al Norley, Jane Rinard and Kirk Douglas for officiating.

We had 26 riders out for the race and it looks like another group 2 member gets to graduate.

NECC LEARN TO RIDE PROGRAM

Date Posted: June 1/09

WE ARE ALL IN FAVOUR OF PROMOTING THE SPORT OF CYCLING TO YOUNG PEOPLE - RIGHT?

Well then - now is the time for YOU to put your money where your bottom bracket is.

We are fortunate to have a new team running the Club's Learn to Ride Program this year. Under the leadership of Ed and Darryl, assisted by Laura, James, Simon, Rob and Victor, this 12 week program is now approaching its mid-point.

This is where it gets "interesting", starting in just over a week (Monday June 8) the program takes to the open road and the kids put into practice the skills they have been working on in the closed environment of a church parking lot.

Those who have helped with this part of the program in the past know that you simply cannot have too many adult bodies around when taking a group of kids on the open road.

If you are going for a ride anyway, why not come out and ride with the kids? You'll feel all the better for it. Be at the works yard at the corner of St John's Road and Woodbine at 6:30 PM, starting Monday June 8.

We owe it to the kids and their parents, as well as to our members running the course, to have sufficient adult supervisors on the road.

Send an email to Ed Veal at real.deal@rogers.com to let him know you can help at some of the Mondays in June and July

TRIATHLON COURSE NEEDS CYCLING INSTRUCTORS

Date Posted: May 29/09

Please see the message below from Crystal Drummond (the Coach of the Speedplay Multisport Team), read the attached brochures and consider helping out at this program, which will be run right here in Newmarket. Who knows, perhaps in return they'll teach you how to swim in freezing water, or even worse, how to run and permanently mess up your knees.

Please contact Crystal directly at the email/phone below

Speedplay hosts a 'Kids Triathlon Skills Clinic' every year, and this year we are also hosting a 'Youth & Adult Triathlon Training Day'. We host these clinics to promote sport and physical activity in our area. Kids in particular need skills in cycling safety and handling skills. Unfortunately, the cycling coach that we had lined up (and he has participated in helping us the last two years) just emailed me that he broke his foot last weekend and won't be able to come!

So, I am hoping to find someone (or several 'someones') who is/are:
a) An experienced cyclist
b) Good with kids
c) Willing to volunteer some time for the cause

We expect between 25-30 kids (ages 7-11) on Saturday June 6 and we break into smaller groups, so it is like working with 10-15 kids at a time. We teach these kids basic safety and handling skills in a huge parking lot setting. The Clinic is from 12:30-6:00, but the cycling portion would be from 1:00-4:00 (there is a mini triathlon after 5:15, but the volunteer could leave if necessary).

On Sunday June 7, we are expecting around 10 youth, and 20 adults for the training day. We will be taking the youth (ages 11-16) and adults onto the roads of the marsh to work on some more advanced skills of cadence, gearing, passing, hills etc. and also some basic safety and handling skills. The training day is from 10-3:30, but the cycling portion will be from 11-1:30 or so.

Thanks for your consideration, …and please contact me ASAP if you are able to help us with this program.

MEMBERSHIP NEWS - MAY EDITION

Date Posted: May 26/09

Hi All:

I've just received even more membership applications today and it's unlikely that you'll get your NECC Membership Card by this Friday in time for the Lindsay Race or for any of our other rides.

So, if you sent-in your membership application recently and want to participate in any of our events prior to you getting your Membership Card, then send me an email and I'll let you know if I got it. If I do have your Membership Form, Waiver, Cheque and License (if applicable) without any errors, then you can start participating before you receive your Membership Card.

This is a one-time offer this year so act now. Otherwise, you will have to show your card. I'm clamping-down. So have your card ready to show - just in case. I had a bad time trial last night and I'm in no mood for negotiations or compromises.

Also, I will be unable to process any applications during the first two weeks of July. So if you want to race/ride, then get your application in way before then!

INTERCLUB #2 - ORO SHORT COURSE

Date Posted: May 26/09

We had 56 riders out for interclub #2 the Oro Short Course. 5 laps for ~72k with 4 groups on the course. The weather was sunny, 20c with a wind that shifted during the race.

Not sure when group 2 caught group 1 but group 3 closed the gap early on the final lap and group 4 decided to join the mass finish on the north side of the course.

Full Results are posted.

Great day to ride.

ADOPT-A-ROAD THIS SATURDAY!!!

Date Posted: May 20/09

YES, ITS TIME TO CLEAN UP OUR KENNEDY TIME TRIAL COURSE AGAIN

Always an occasion for collective merriment and group bonding. I shall fulfill my usual supervisory role from the comfort of my vehicle while you peons toil in the sweltering late May sun.

Bring boots, hat, bug spray. Gloves and garbage bags will be provided. Kids 12yrs and older can participate fully. Bring your bike if you so desire for a ride before the clean up starts or thereafter. If you ride before the clean up make sure you are back before 10:00 AM to sign up, receive your instructions and get assigned to your clean up group - i.e. not like last time Victor.

Hope to see a record number out. We need a mere 18.69% of our 2009 membership to break the attendance record for this event - you do get my point about community responsibility, don't you.

And remember: NECC RIDES BUT DOES NOT RUN ITSELF

BRADFORD SOUTH - RESULTS REDUX

Date Posted: May 19/09

With threatening weather all around us the rescheduled Bradford race was run without precipitation.

We had 20 riders for the event and with the strong south wind the small groups were in for a pretty tough ride.

The winner of the race was Don Krueger who rode away from Group 2 and soloed in for the victory. The next five places went to group 4A who proved that when it comes to road riding the bigger the group the better.

Congratulations to all the competitors and thanks to Al and Tony for officiating.

Full results are posted.

BRADFORD SOUTH - RESULTS

Date Posted: May 9/09

The winner of the Bradford South race was the weather. With heavy rain, lightening and possible hail the race has been rescheduled for
Saturday May 16 @ 10:00 am.

The number of crazy people who actually showed up today amazed me.

So, we'll see you all next Saturday.

SHARE THE ROAD COALITION UPDATE APRIL 2009

Date Posted: May 6/09

Attached under NEWS ARCHIVES to the right is a news release from Eleanor McMahon, founder of the Share The Road Coalition, announcing the recent passage of "Greg's Law".

As many of you know, Eleanor's husband - OPP Sergeant Greg Stobbart - was killed by a truck driver with a long history of driving with a suspended license, while cycling in the Milton area.

The annual Share The Road Ride in Greg's memory, which many Eagles participated in last year, will be held on September 20 - MARK IT ON YOUR CALENDAR.

This ride will be the kick-off event for the Ontario Bike Summit that the coalition is organizing for September 21-22 in Waterloo. Safety while riding is a major concern for us all and the Share The Road Coalition deserves full support from our membership.

INTERCLUB NO.1 - DUNDALK - PRELIMINARY RESULTS

Date Posted: May 4/09

The first interclub of the season was held under sunny skies but with the standard Dundalk wind. We had 37 riders in 4 groups.

The groups came together on the second lap and everyone was mixed together coming into the final lap. Tony Abramavicius outsprinted Andrew Watson for the win. Neil Hendry was third. Dmytro Mulyava and Shawn Cranwell rounded out the top 5. The next ten placings will be sorted out once I review the tape.

Fun start to the season.

Volunteer Opportunities, TOUR OF SPEED, Saturday June 13

Date Posted: April 28/09

The 3rd Annual Tour of Speed will soon be here and we are looking for volunteers.

This race for boys and girls ages 12-16, has become the gold standard for youth racing in Ontario. This is largely due to the number of volunteers who have participated in the previous events. So far the race has been a big success so we hope we can continue to promote youth cycling by providing the young athletes with a great day on their bikes.

Firm commitments are not required at this time but please let us know if you might be available to help out.

EAGLES BIG BIKE TEAM RECORD FASTEST TIME OF THE DAY

Date Posted: April 28/09

Below is a message from Team Captain Chris Schiafone, who together with his brother Brandon inspired us to this awe-inspiring performance last Saturday. The team also raised more than $1500 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. See the ATTACHED PICTURE from the occasion:

Congratulations to the Newmarket Eagles that participated in today's Big Bike For Heart and Stroke. I was very impressed with the ride and our performance.

I would like to thank you all very much for coming out and riding with me, it was my pleasure to be your captain.

You should give yourselves a pat on the back, because at Boston Pizza, I was approached by Jessica Williams, the Heart and Stroke Coordinator, who I believe was on our bike and she told me that we were number 1 for spirit and definitely the loudest team, thank goodness.I was being laughed at by the end because I couldn't talk anymore. Also, we were the fastest team to complete the ride with a time of 22 minutes 20 seconds even with two or three stops.

Thank you all very very much once again, I hope you had a great ride, and look forward to seeing you all on the bike next year again. If you have any feedback, please feel free to contact me at: cm.schiafone@sympatico.ca

Your Captains Chris and Brandon Schiafone

FIRST INTERCLUB: SUNDAY MAY 3

Date Posted: April 27/09

Next Sunday is the first Interclub event at Dundalk (details are in the Calendar Section of the Website).

Paradoxically, the course is in the Dundalk Highlands but is actually rather flat - although admittedly windy and sometimes snowy. Like all our events this is ability handicapped, using the group pursuit format and is therefore suitable for riders of all abilities.

This series is a great opportunity to compete with riders from the Barrie and Owen Sound Clubs over a variety of interesting courses in the Near North of Newmarket.

The Eagles are at risk of being outnumbered by the Burgeoning Hordes from Barrie, so consider participating.

Andrew

SUNDAY RIDES START AT 9:30 AM

Date Posted: April 25/09

Sunday rides will start at 9:30 am and will be a bit shorter than in previous years. These rides will focus on 'recovery' and will be easyish, but will have the usual traditional sprint if we're heading west on Vivian Rd as we approach Woodbine Av. NO one will get dropped for very long and we regroup often. Civility is key. If you want to go faster, then join another group, with all due respect.

Dave and Victor

THURSDAY NIGHT RIDES START APRIL 30

Date Posted: April 24/09

THE LONG DARKE NIGHT OF THE SOUL IS OVER: THURSDAY NIGHT TRAINING RIDES START APRIL 30

Based on detailed astronomical calculations there may be enough light to start the Thursday night ride on April 30. Just to be on the safe side, make sure you have lights with you. This will provide an excellent tune-up for the first Interclub Race a few days later (Dundalk, May 3).

The nominal meeting point is 1133 Kingdale Road, Newmarket (there is lots of space for parking on the street) at the non-nominal time of 6:30PM. The ride goes east on Mulock, then north on Warden (recently re-paved) to Holborn and then incorporates one, two, or three, 8km laps between Warden - Kennedy - Queensville - Holborn. With one lap, the total distance is about 40km.

While this ride is designed to be fast-paced, there are usually slower riders (e.g. me), who leave about 10 minutes ahead of 6:30PM, so they can struggle up the hors categorie 404 overpass before the fast guys catch them. Also, because the course involves multiple laps, there is an opportunity to get back on with the fast guys if you get dropped. This ensures that everyone can get a good fast training ride, whatever their ability level.

Don't forget to have your Membership Card with you and read the 2009 Information Brochure, so you are familar with our rules for group riding, which are intended to assure safety for all.

ANOTHER NO GO FOR A TUESDAY TT

Date Posted: April 22/09

This Spring is not cooperating on Tuesday evenings. Cold, windy, rainy weather greeted the skeleton crew who showed last evening in Bradford. And so it was decided that we wouldn't have a Time Trial. As I left the scene at 6:15 the rain subsided and the skies began to clear. Mother Nature playing a cruel joke on me yet again. Curses! I may have to make a sacrifice to the weather gods for next Tuesday in BEETON, 6:30pm start. See you there.

KENNEDY TIME TRIAL APRIL 14

Date Posted: April 14/09

After last week's 'NO GO' due to a late visit by WINTER, we finally got the TT season started. 19 enthusiatic riders started and finished with Ed Veal showing good early season form with a 20:04 (44.85 kph)! Six riders broke 40 kph. Results are posted.

Thanks to Al Norley and Brian Brill, for some creative timing techniques, and at the turn we had Heather Grant and Tony Osborne.

HELL OF THE NORTH REPORT BY DEAN ROBERTSON

Date Posted: April 13/09

I'd like to say I did the Newmarket Eagles proud today. I arose early today at 6:30 and prepared myself a hearty breakfast. My bike had been expertly prepared in advance and only required transportation to the hallowed starting line at Musslemens Lake. Upon arrival there, I was surrounded by an eclectic mix of road bikes and a few mountain bikes all in danger of blowing away in the blustery wind while my trusty hybrid was firmly and safely anchored to the ground; talk about your psychological advantage! There was much friendly banter between the brightly costumed whippet-like young men and women and some good natured sideward glances at the mature gentlemen in his yellow windbreaker. Many had obviously journeyed up from the great metropolis in the south earlier in the week to scope out the impending trek. I overheard some of the more timid riders make excuses to others in advance that the dreaded "Trench" would be too difficult to ride so they planned to carry their bikes and run the 20 kilometer gamut rather than ride through it. Can you imagine!

We started out at 8:30, 200 brave and intrepid souls, cycling north up the hills of the 9th line, in minus 2 degrees weather into a finger freezing north wind at a blistering pace of 35 kmh for our fantastic journey through Ontario's northland. I thought I would fool all the other riders and give them a false sense of security by letting them get an early lead. This was a successful tactic as the other riders quickly developed a lead that I am sure they thought I could never surmount. It was such a successful tactic that by the time I crested the large hill just north of Vivian Rd, the other riders had obviously hidden in the woods at the side of the road so that I wouldn't see their shame.

As I said, I'd like to say I did the Newmarket Eagles proud, but as I didn't, I did the next best thing by keeping my jacket fully zipped and hiding my team jersey. I was fully prepared to tell anybody I ran into coming the other way that I was training for the double-leg amputee road biking events of the Special Olympics but the opportunity never arose. At some point in the race, I can't really recall when or where but it was really, really (really), far into the race, I decided to emulate Rosie Ruiz and take a short-cut to the finishing line where I was met by a small canine of mixed heritage who was indifferent to the timing of my arrival and was just happy to see anyone.

I celebrated my personal victory over the "Hell of the North" at home with a cup of hot coffee, a freshly toasted hot cross bun, some chocolate eggs, the Sunday paper and a nap. Ah, heaven!

KENNEDY ROAD: ADOPT-A-ROAD CLEAN-UP, SATURDAY MAY 23

Date Posted: March 27/09

At the last AGM you all agreed that our Adopt-a-Road clean up of part of our Kennedy Road TT course should continue as one small step for promoting the face of road cycling to our community.

Now is the time to put words into action since we have renewed our committment to this program for a further 2 year period.

Our Spring Clean-up is 10:00 AM, Saturday May 23....and before you start scrambling to find your calendars and a reason not to participate, I can tell you that there are no other road races that day (the Oro Interclub race is the following day).

We had 36 members at the two clean-ups in 2008 - which is the current record - and which we hope to exceed on May 23.

Mark your calendars now and get ready to meet at the TT parking area at Kennedy and Mt Albert Roads. More details will be forthcoming.

SATURDAY MORNING RIDES HAVE STARTED

Date Posted: March 17/09

Paradoxical as it may seem - coincident with the change to DST - Saturday morning rides have now reverted to 8:30 AM (parking lot at Main and Water St Newmarket). Here's your participants' check list:

- Do not forget to have your membership card with you.

- Do remember to read, mark and inwardly digest, the 2009 Information Brochure you received with your card (especially the new additions underlined in red).

- Our group riding skills and disciplined behaviour on the road need to be exemplary and when they lapse, everyone is responsible to speak out (read the brochure).

- Expect the number of participants to vary according to the weather. Rides are weekly from now on, and are never cancelled, so whenever more than one person shows up, we have ipso facto a group ride.

- When numbers justify, we will break up into three groups according to planned average speed, so that all members of each group finish the ride together (read the brochure).

- That means that the faster riders in the group have to do most of the pulling and need to check periodically that no one is getting dropped (read the brochure).

- Most importantly, post-ride, do join us at the Everything Chocolate Coffee Shop on Main Street, for the best in coffee, techno-babble and trash talking.

- And once again, (read the brochure), for a safe and enjoyable riding experience for all.

Lord Darke (Vader)

FOREST CITY VELODROME 2009 - Part 1

Date Posted: February 27/09

Hi fellow Eagles,

If you want to learn to round out your cycling experience by going around in circles, the Forest City Velodrome in London has introductory Level 1 training sessions on Saturday March 7, 14, and 21. Richard Nurgitz and Fred Worm want to go and request the company of other like minded individuals who seek to enhance their cycling experience. Your attendance has to be confirmed with the management.

The Level 1 session costs $30 which included use of a rental bike. The session starts at 11AM and ends at 1PM. There is a Skills and Drills session that runs from 1 to 3 if you want to enhance your skills. It is the shortest velodrome in the world and we have it here in Ontario. The coaching is excellent and they can teach you so many useful techniques that you can take on the road. All you need to bring is warm clothing, your pedals, and no fear. The Forest City Velodrome has an excellent website (link here) with riding etiquette and other useful information which you should read before you go to the track.

Contact Bob Spencer at spencer11@rogers.com to coordinate a date.

PRE-SEASON MEETING - TUESDAY MARCH 3, 7:00 PM

Date Posted: February 19/09

REFLECTIONS ON THE TOPIC OF CORE STRENGTH BY ADAM WADE AND ANDREW DARKE

1. There was great interest in Adam's talk on stretching in January so he is back for a return engagement on the subject of Core Strength for Cycling Performance. This is the ideal time to learn more about an area of fitness often neglected by cyclists. You should bring a towel or small mat with you as he intends to have us practicing core strength exercises on the floor (which is carpeted). Our thanks to Adam for giving up his time to bring the benefit of his knowledge and experience to our kinetic endeavours.

2. In addition, you will listen to me expound on many and varied topics concerning the Core Strengths of our club, as we enter the new season. If you miss this incisive exploration of current issues you will frankly be lost for the entire season.

3. Furthermore, if you have carefully filled out your 2009 membership form and waiver and have the funds at hand, you are permitted to bring them for inspection by the inscrutable Victor, who will review them for the inevitable errors and have you correct them. This will ultimately save you time in receiving your membership card without which, frankly, you are nothing. If you have already mailed Victor your forms you will have the privilege of receiving your card from him in person.

4. And finally, if you have signed up to ride the Big Bike For Heart and Stroke, you will be able to pick up your forms from Chris at the meeting and if you have not yet signed up, frankly, you are nobody until you do.

Location: Newmarket Public Library 7:00 PM (the same one to which some of you found your way, on Feb 18: 430 Park Ave, just west of Main St - parking in Market Square, off Park Ave, or across Main Street and down the steps to the Community Centre parking lot).

Date: Saturday April 25, 2009
Time: Our ride will push off at 3:00PM
Location: St. Andrew's Village, Aurora

I shall not embarrass the Club or myself by publicizing the number of members who responded to the first announcement. Let's just say it is in the low single digits and Chris has room for 19 more Eagles.

REPLY TO CHRIS AT cm.schiafone@sympatico.ca

Chris plans to be at our meeting on Feb 18 and will gratefully receive all offers of participation and will hand out the pledge forms. NO, that is not a reason to NOT attend the meeting - YOU will hear a fascinating talk on the history of the bicycle from Lorne Shields.

CYCLING IN ITALY 2009 - with Jeff and Tina

Date Posted: November 29/08

We are starting to plan our 2009 cycling trip in La Bell'Italia, and we'd love to have any interested NECC members come with us! Here are the tentative details:

The trip will be 14-15 days, Fri. April 17 - Sat. May 2. We'll fly from Pearson into Rome or Bologna, depending on the best flight, since it's easy and cheap to take a train to Riccione from either one.

We're going to stay at the same hotel as last year, Hotel Poker; among the services they offer are guided rides, post-ride buffet lunch, laundering of riding clothes, wine with dinner. Jeff and I will rent bikes, and I recommend it, but you can bring your own. I won't know what the airline's surcharge (if any) will be until we've found out more about flights. Bike rental cost is about $300 / week.

Non-cycling people would also enjoy this trip (for example, spouses or s.o.'s of cyclists); Riccione is a little beach town, but many incredible sites are easily reached by train or bus, from Urbino to the Republic of San Marino. In fact, 2 days a week, when there's no guided ride, we plan to touristically explore the region.

We're aiming for a total trip cost of $3000 per person, ALL INCLUSIVE. For more details, read my 'Cycling in Italy' piece in the News Archives section of the website, or email me at tinamayb@yorku.ca

YOUTH TRACK DAY IN LONDON, ONTARIO

Date Posted: October 08/09

The Forest City Velodrome in London has a kids program for 9 to 16 year olds.

Velo Kids is an introductory program to get the kids comfortable with riding a fixed gear bike on the flat infield and then onto the track. The instruction is superb. I’ve been to the track many times and I have seen the kids take to it quite well and they’ve got grins from ear to ear!

The program runs on Saturdays from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm. The kids can then continue-on from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm with more instruction, by which time they will be nice and pooped! And, they have plenty of track bikes for the kids! Don’t bring your own, unless it’s track specific.

If you are interested in coming or would like more information, then please send me an email or give me a call: victortolgyessy@yahoo.ca or (905) 898-1869.

November 1st or 8th are open, but we should act fairly soon – by early next week, please!

Just so the parents aren’t left-out, they offer on the same day and introductory class called Track 1 for the adults. It runs from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. Also, from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm, they have a Recreation session for those that have completed Track 1.

Let me know if you’re interested in doing this as well. Perhaps we could make arrangements for car-pooling.

It’s a lot of fun and it’s a great outing for both kids and parents. We may even want to stay and watch the night-time racing which starts at 5:30 pm.

EAGLES FLOCK TO SHARE THE ROAD RIDE

Date Posted: September 30/08

20 members (including some from Barrie and Lindsay!) travelled to Milton September 28 for the annual Share The Road Ride, held in memory of OPP Sergeant Greg Stobbart who was killed by a truck while cycling in the area. PICTURED HERE is the whole group with Eleanor McMahon, Greg's wife and founder of the Share The Road Coalition (see News Archives for her latest update). The ride was excellently organized over a great course with lots of police support. We wish our one casualty (Amos Cohen) a speedy recovery. You will see many of the attendees wearing their Share The Road jersey at upcoming Eagles events. Mark it in your calendar for next year.

LITTLE JOHN RESPONDS

Date Posted: February 11/08

In answer to your question:

The time was 3 hours, 32 minutes, and 54 seconds. The record was set in 1954. Paul and I did 1 hour 10 minute rides, Jimmy a 1 hour 12 minute ride. I road the last 5 miles on a flat tyre (silly British spelling here). The record stood for 6 years. How's that for a good memory?

LJ

I'd say that's a very good memory. I think the speed works out to approx. 41 kph, for nearly 50 kms, I'm impressed.

NECC NAME THAT RIDER CONTEST

Date Posted: Feb 08/08

The winner of the NAME THAT RIDER contest was Gord Clarke. correctly identifying (when he was asked!) the young chap, in the centre of the photo CLICK HERE, as John Blunsdon.

It was 1954 when 'Little John' Blunsdon and team mates Jimmy Love (1948 Olympic Track Team member) and Paul Baulch had just set the British National 30 Mile TT record. I wonder if Little John remembers their time?

You can also see some of the history of these guys on the Willesdon CC website.
(see 1954) http://www.willesdencyclingclub.co.uk/about/history.htm

I believe the President is springing for a free coffee for Gord. I still say the lad on the left looks a lot like Andrew Darke.

SINGLE LAP TRACK RECORD FALLS

Date Posted: Jan 16/08

Nineteen year old Joe Veloce from Fonthill, Ontario smashed the 18 month old track record for the single lap of 8.06 seconds (set by 1982 World Champion Gord Singleton) by riding 7.85 seconds or 63.287 kph at the 138m Forest City Velodrome in London.

Three other FCV track records fell... for more information go to http://www.forestcityvelodrome.ca/

NECC CLEANS UP ON AWARDS

Date Posted: Dec 4/07

The Canadian Cycling Association, at this year's AGM in Calgary this weekend, announced the Eagles as its "Builder of the Year"
see http:www.canadiancyclist.com And check Dec. 1 CCA AGM Day 1
Admittedly it would have been nice if someone from the CCA had told us about this, but we are grateful for the recognition. Those of you, of which there are many (87.4%), who missed our own AGM last week may also not know that the Ontario Cycling Association awarded the Eagles their award for "Road Contributor of the Year" at its recent Cycling Celebration event. Both awards undoubtedly reflect the efforts of the club, and especially its youth committee, in promoting youth cycling and organizing the first OCA youth race this past June. Mark Summers was in attendance at the OCA awards event and accepted the award on behalf of the club.
