Bradford South Club Race

Date Posted: April 29, 2012

Hi All:

The first race of the season was a stunning administrative success, IMHO! No one gave me a hard time and everyone was pleasant! Many thanks to the volunteers – your names will be posted on the results page!

As for the handicapping, I suspect groups 4A and 4B aren’t too upset with the final results. Group 5 made a valiant effort as they soared through the race to catch everyone, but only fell short of the winner by 2 minutes and 48 seconds, if I understand Al’s math, which is impeccably accurate. As for Groups 1 and 2, I apologise for overestimating your average speeds – my bad and I will recalibrate for the Lindsay race. Some of you in group 3 will not be returning to group 3 – congratulations on your promotion! And finally, some of you in group 4 will be demoted to group 3 – I suspect this is a good thing.

So, congratulations to the winners!

1st Shawn Cranwell
2nd Aiken Scherberger
3rd Pierre Perrin
4th Brian Brill

As for everyone else, I do have most of you ranked in order as you finished, but I’ve got a few holes in the list. So, if you wouldn’t mind watching this video on YouTube, can you help me out and see if you recognize yourself or others and email me a list? If I don’t hear from anyone, then I’ll just guess – it’s only about 4 finishers that I can’t recognize. Here is the link:

http://youtu.be/rwxuUMNFFG0

You need to copy/past this link into your browser since it’s the only way to see the video.

Cheers and see you at Lindsay,

Victor

THE TOUR DE SPEED IS COMING - June 16, 2012

Date Posted: April 24, 2012

The annual Tour de Speed is the Clubs largest organizational challenge of the year, second only to the challenge of getting members to attend the Annual General Meeting,  volunteer to marshal a Time Trial, sweep a corner for a Club Pursuit, or ride in an organized pace-line.

Our Mr. Tour De Speed, Dean Robertson needs volunteers to help at the Tour de Speed June 16. This major event needs the support of everyone interested in BUILDING THE SPORT OF CYCLING. If you can spend some time supporting the club and more importantly supporting young cyclists from our Club and other Clubs throughout Ontario, please come along and help.

For details of how you can help, whether just for an hour or all day, please email Dean at deanrobertson@rogers.com

APRIL 24, 2012: TONIGHTS TIME TRIAL IS CANCELLED

Date Posted: April 24, 2012

For the first time ever and against our usual practice - but for obvious reasons - we will live to race another day.
Apologies if by some chance you did not receive this message but turned up anyway in the frozen wasteland of the Bradford course - but sometimes life is like that.

BE PREPARED: THE START OF CLUB AND INTERCLUB PURSUIT EVENTS IS IMMINENT

Date Posted: April 20, 2012

You can expect many announcements over the coming week. Don’t take your eyes off your email for an instant.

First club pursuit – Next Saturday, April 28, 10:00am start - Bradford South course (see Calendar page of website for map: www.newmarketeagles.com)

First Interclub pursuit - Sunday May 6, 10:00am start – Oro course (see website for map).

The events in both of the these series are open to and can be enjoyed by all, because they are ability-handicapped - usually in a way that  ensures that elite riders never win.
This format is technically called an Australian Pursuit - and is designed to bring out the best in all of us, in terms of collaboration, competitiveness and duplicity.

In the Club Series there are medals for the winner of the individual  events and a trophy for the overall winner presented at the Annual Awards Banquet.
In the Interclub Series, there are prizes (cycling gear) for the overall winner and the next 15-20 participants in the Interclub Series.

Your obligation: Do not arrive a 9:55 am and expect to ride. Get there early so registration does not become a shambles with resulting distress to our Race Secretary. Also it would be nice if the corners could be swept by more than the "faithful few" (FOR ONCE). Bring a broom, get out of bed a little earlier and choose a corner to sweep.

REMEMBER: For both these series - NO MEMBERSHIP CARD - NO RIDE

RULES, RULES, RULES: The following are displayed at both Club and  Interclub events and you are required to sign-in before each event indicating that you have read, understand and agree with these rules

NECC: PRE-EVENT INSTRUCTIONS FOR CLUB AND INTERCLUB PURSUITS (version: 28 April, 2010; amended 20 April, 2012).

• This event is registered with the OCA but it is not sanctioned and is not subject to an OCA Event Permit.
• It is covered under the provisions of the OCA insurance policy, provided that you are a member of NECC (or for Interclubs, that every  participant is a member of the Newmarket, Barrie, Mountain View or Owen Sound Cycling Clubs).
• Only you are responsible for your safety - as stated in the OCA waiver you signed when joining the club.
• The roads are totally open to traffic and there may, or may not, be people assisting at intersections to inform you of oncoming traffic.
• Intersections are neutralized. You have to proceed through intersections with regard to the rules of the road and give way to  traffic with the right of way.
• You must not cross the yellow centre line or obstruct traffic.
• You may ride competitively but not aggressively.
• If someone in your group crashes you should stop and give assistance and be prepared to give a witness statement for reporting to the OCA.
• If you drop out of the event you must inform the timekeeper.

LONG SLEEVE JERSEYS

Date Posted: April 20, 2012

Hi Fellow Eagles,

The long sleeve jerseys have been selling so well that we ordered extra stock. The thick material jerseys have been receiving rave reviews from the riders who have the good fortune to own one. More extra large (XL )sizes have been received as several riders who thought that the large size would do were more comfortable in XL due to the thick material. Place your order today as it will be cool this week end. They are 65.00 cheap, you cannot get a better bargain, not even from Nashbar.

Call me, Bob Spencer at 905-898-1184 to get a Genuine Newmarket Eagles long sleeve jersey.

SATURDAY MORNING RIDES

Date Posted: March 14, 2012

WHEN: well of course… Saturdays 8:30am from April 1 to November 1; (9:30am late Fall, Winter and early Spring).

WHERE: meet at the Parking Lot on Doug Duncan Drive, just north of Fairy Lake in Newmarket and just east of Main Street (near the tennis bubble)

HOW: like a well-organized and disciplined GROUP - please remember:

1. If you have not yet applied for 2012 membership please do not show up and expect to ride with the group – this raises insurance issues. If you are unsure about whether your membership has been processed, please contact Chris Raynor and ask him to confirm it to you and me, Andrew Darke.
While Chris is generally less volatile than our much loved previous Membership Coordinator, he is a big lad and will not take kindly to interlopers, so let’s avoid any “unfortunate” scenes in the parking lot during the ***membership card check***

2. Since many of us - based on last season’s experience - are sorely in need of a refresher course, do read “The Lost Art of the Group Ride” before coming out to any Eagles rides: http://carolinacyclingnews.com/2011/09/0/lost-art-of-the-group-ride/.

If you want to hammer up hills, run stops signs and yellow lines and not care about who else in your group is getting left behind by your surging tactics, then this is not the ride for you.

3. And if you don’t appreciate advice from lawyers on how to ride your bike, perhaps the opinion of Team Sky’s Michael Barry (“The Group Ride”) will be persuasive. You will receive a copy of this with your membership card: http://michaelbarry.ca/2011/11/the-group-ride-2/

WHY: well the race season starts very soon. First Time Trial is April 10. Check the calendar schedules on the website for Club Races, InterClub Races. If there are any revisions of events you will receive notices by email first.

Andrew

YOU CAN APPLY FOR 2012 EAGLES MEMBERSHIP NOW

Date Posted: January 5, 2012

However you need to understand the NEW system - Tee Hee

First you will be delighted to know that we have a new Membership Secretary - yes, Victor has moved on to bigger and better things and we thank him for his many years of faithful service to the club. Consistent with the Peter Principle, as learned in business school - by which people are promoted until they reach their level of incompetence - he will become our new Race Secretary.
DO NOT HENCEFORTH ADDRESS ANY MEMBERSHIP QUESTIONS TO VICTOR - HE WILL BITE YOUR HEAD OFF.

A big thanks also to Phil Harper on his retirement from the position of Race Secretary and for the many years of enjoyable events that he organized for us. He promises to return to racing if Victor’s handicapping for group 1 is overly generous.

So, you will henceforth deal only with our new Membership Secretary - Chris Raynor - who, as a logistics expert is ideally qualified for the position even though his only cycling qualifications are that he can almost keep up with his 7 year old son - for now. As for his likely disposition when faced with incompetence on the part of prospective members, it remains untested as yet.

Possession of a 2012 Membership Card* is essential to your participation in any Eagles events after December 31, 2011. You should also note that any early season group rides that might occur before everyone has got their act together and obtained their memberships are NOT INSURED.

You will have two methods of applying for your Eagles Membership for 2012 and one of them may even work:

1. ON-LINE PROCESS
Details will be posted on the Membership page of the website (newmarketeagles.com/membership) soon. You will be able to complete the membership and waiver forms and pay on-line with your credit card.

2. BY DOWN-LOADING THE FORMS FROM THE WEBSITE AND SENDING THEM TO CHRIS RAYNOR

1.  The 2012 Membership Forms are on the Membership Page
2.  You need to complete BOTH the NECC membership form AND the OCA waiver form.
3.  You can fill in the Membership Form on the screen. Then print both forms off.
4.  Read the instructions they contain, before attempting the actual completion of the forms.
5.  The forms cannot be submitted on-line or brought to any event (race, group ride, etc...) and must be mailed-in as per instructions on the Membership Form. As one alternative, you may deposit your application in the home mailbox of Chris Raynor.
6.  If you do not complete the form on the screen, you need to complete it LEGIBLY, using your best penmanship.
7.  You must  complete ALL FIELDS including the NEW SECTIONS on Emergency Contacts and Volunteering.
8.  If you do not fully and legibly complete the forms they will not be processed by Chris.  Depending on his disposition on any given day, he may pursue you for corrections, or may ignore you until prompted with a terse question such as:  “where is my *****membership card?”
9.  Submit your cheque in the CORRECT AMOUNT payable to Newmarket Eagles Cycling Club (i.e. just as written here).
10. If you have an OCA (UCI) race licence and want to claim a discounted membership fee, you MUST include a photocopy of your licence.
11. If you do not yet have your OCA licence you need to submit the FULL membership fee (55.00) and when you get your licence, send a photocopy of it to Chris who will issue a refund as stated on the membership form.

*You will receive your new membership package, including Membership Card 2012, as soon as Chris gets the cards from the OCA’s printer. In the meantime, if you have submitted your membership application to Chris and want to participate in an Eagles event, just email him (christopher.raynor@chrobinson.com) and ask if he has received your application and if you are therefore a member in good standing.

MAKING THE MOST OF MY MILEAGE

Date Posted: December 9, 2011

Since I volunteered to drive my daughter back to University in Halifax this past September, a 2 day drive, I thought it would be a good idea to bring my bike. On my return trip I stopped in Quebec City for 3 days. Excellent weather allowed me to enjoy some riding before the Quebec Grand Prix Pro bike race. Quebec City is an excellent venue to watch a Pro bike race, within the old city and with all the international teams, it gives you a "European" feel. You can walk pretty much the whole course as it winds around the old town with plenty of climbing, twisting and turning. Philippe Gilbert (Omega Pharma-Lotto) won with an exciting uphill breakaway being chased down by Robert Gesink (Rabobank) who was gaining fast but ran out of real estate in the final uphill sprint.
A short drive to Quebec makes for a great bike vacation while taking in some exciting racing.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS - DO IT NOW

Date Posted: October 26, 2011

NECC Annual General Meeting - Tuesday December 6, 7:00pm at Newmarket Public Library.
(438 Park Ave Newmarket, ON. L3Y 1W1. There is some parking near the library or you can also park where we meet for Saturday and Sunday rides - walk up to Main St and crossover to Park Ave)

Yes, the meeting that everyone loves to hate and at which the Executive forlornly hopes for others to step forward and take their place.

But if you do not yet feel you are ready for such exalted office, at least give one evening out of your life to avoid the pressures of Christmas shopping and contribute to the ongoing success of the club. You can always borrow a book from the library for the duration of the meeting.

An agenda will be forthcoming. If you would like to suggest items for inclusion please let me know and if you have ideas for possible speakers for a winter meeting or two, please bring them to the AGM.

Now very important - We need a headcount to go with our reservation, e-mail Dave at hammond.4@sympatico.ca by Saturday, October 1.

Cheers,
Dave

EAGLES WIN BATTLE OF BARRIE WITH A MOUNTAIN VIEW IN THE DISTANCE

Date Posted: September 12, 2011

15 riders from Newmarket Eagles CC, 12 from Barrie CC and 8 from Mountainview CC (Midland) participated in this new event, last Thursday Sept. 8.

On a buttery smooth, flat, quiet course, a number of Newmarket riders recorded personal best times for 15km (yours truly did his fastest 15 since 1997)

The Interclub TT Challenge Trophy was won by NECC based on the combined times of the top 4 riders plus the President of each club, as follows:

NECC - 108 min, 19 sec. MVCC - 110 mins, 58 secs. BCC - 111 mins, 22 secs.

Congratulations to Ed Veal for establishing an incredible course record (47.5 km/hour!) and we gratefully accept his offer to become President for a day every September (perhaps not unlike the subterfuge perpetrated by MTVCC this year? - or am I reading their 2011 AGM minutes incorrectly - we shall have words!).

Congratulations also to XL Prez Tony O who at 76yrs strong did a very respectable time despite having a senior moment, riding off into the gravel, down the ditch and back out, all without getting off his aero bars!

Next year the thinking is to make it a series of three events with each club hosting on their home course.

GREEN MOUNTAIN STAGE RACE REPORT

Date Posted: September 12, 2011

Below is an uncharacteristically brief report from Chris Raynor about the recent Green Mountain Stage Race in Vermont. Also uncharacteristically he admits that he had to walk, I bet Aiden (his 7yr old son) would not have walked.

Green Mountain Stage Race Wrap-Up

Glen McCrone, Chad Madaleno, Chris Ivy and I had a great time at the race this year.  I even made the Wrap Up pictures, making the Eagles jersey proud!

The open race on Stage 3 is a great event that everyone should try.  This is a very well organized event and you can always figure out something to do in Vermont with a bike. Glen even finished an impressive 11th place; unfortunately I had to take a couple of breaks up the mountain to walk, while both Chad and Chris were able to get GC rankings after competing in the entire stage race; 10km TT, 100km circuit race, 100km point to point, and a very wet crit this year.

Chad has great accommodations right at the race site that can sleep 10-12 people at a great price so if you are interested in going next year, reach out to him.

PERCY SHROPSHIRE MEMORIAL ROAD RACE 2011

Date Posted: August 29, 2011

David Pierce outsprints a select group to win an action packed 2011 Club Championship Road Race! Silver went to Simon MacDonald, and Iain Allen took bronze. Thanks to Kathy and daughter Amy for presenting the trophy on this 10th anniversary of Percys passing. Full results are posted along with point standings. That includes InterClub standings too!

Thank Geoff Smith for sweeping the corners and for this photo album: Percy Shropshire Memorial 2011.

And now, on to the OVERALL SERIES CHAMPIONSHIP to be decided at SANDFORD Saturday September 10, the championship is still up for grabs

And remember this Tuesday, August 30 its the 15k individual TT championship on the Kennedy course. It will be a 15k this time

EPILOGUE TO THE TT SEASON – THE INTERCLUB TT CHAMPIONSHIP – Thursday September 8, 6:30pm, Near Barrie

Date Posted: August 23, 2011

Barrie CC has a new fast 15km time trial course which has no more than about 25m +/- elevation and has new buttery smooth pavement. Times have been much faster than their old course.

Newmarket and Mountainview (Midland) CC members are invited to a special Interclub 15km time trial to be held on Thursday, September 8. The event has already been listed with the OCA..

Here are the details:

Date: Thursday Sept. 8th, 2011 Sign-on at 6.00pm First rider off at 6.31pm, followed by others at 30 sec intervals.

Location: Ingram Road, 2.5 km north of Craighurst.

Directions: From Newmarket area: north on Hwy 400, continuing through Barrie onto the 400 extension, exit at Hwy 93, go south on 93 for 200 metres, turn left onto Ingram Road to the start approx 1.5km from 93. Park on the wide shoulder.

From Midland: south on Hwy 93 to Ingram Road.

The Eagles have so many Provincial and National TT Champions in the club (Congrats to the latest - Jane Rinard, Master C winner last weekend) that we should walk away with the prize awarded to the President of the winning club. So everyone needs to come and compete – and excuses for slow times, like last weeks mythical Farm Truck will not be acceptable.

Andrew

NEXT WEEKEND: CLUB RR CHAMPIONSHIP: SUNDAY August 28, 10:00am

Date Posted: August 22, 2011

For the Percy Shropshire Memorial trophy on his favourite course, the climb on the 10th sideroad, see map on the calendar page.

This additional competitive activity is available for those of you who thought last weekends Interclub event at Epping would be rained out and therefore stayed in bed. You were incorrect, not a drop fell on us. Follow this link for Geoff’s great pictures

Note that this event has been moved to a SUNDAY, from its usual Saturday time slot, as a test of whether the traffic is lighter.

As always, this is a handicapped pursuit format, so can be enjoyed equally (with a small margin of error) by all who like to suffer. For those who have not tried one of these events, I am reliably informed that Group 1 (the slowest) will include Team A&M, yes, Ancient and Modern, Amos and Margaret, Congrats to Amos who turned 70 last week.

This is the penultimate event of the RR season and with the points race very close, the overall series win is up for grabs, check the points standings if you think you are a contender, I did!

Commiserations to our current points leader on his bad crash, get well soon Nick, but not before next Sunday.

Andrew

Stage 4 - Dealer.Com Burlington Criterium - .62 mile (1 km) many laps

EPIC EPPING RACE DAY

Date Posted: August 15, 2011

The rain held off and the temperature was very nice for the long tough ride at Epping on Sunday. The wind was out of the North which made the long ride down the Valley a lot less grinding, however this presented a head wind going up the long hill. But gravity plays a bigger role in deflating my imagination than the headwind does when I am going uphill. An enjoyable day with 38 riders participating.

Results are posted, and hopefully the points will follow once the magic formula is calculated.
Also, the long awaited Beeton Interclub results are, ahem, finally posted.

See many of you at the TT tomorrow in Beeton, arghh, more hills.

MARKHAM GIRO YOUTH RACE

Date Posted: August 10, 2011

This past Sunday (August 7) 11 Eagle kids participated in the Markham Giro OCA Youth Race as part of the Ontario Youth Cup Road Series.

Each racer competes in both a TT and road race all on the same day with only a 1 hour rest between both events.

We had many kids podium in the various age categories from U11 to U17 and most were in the top 5! These kids are fast! The average speed in the road race for the Squirt boys (U11) was 29.6 kph and for the Cadet girls (U17) it was 34.5 kph!

Here are the OCA links to the results:

Time Trial TT Results

Road Race RR Results

The event was superbly organized and the kids (and parents!) had fun.
Thanks to all the Eagles for their financial support and encouragement!

THE EPIC EPPING INTERCLUB EVENT - Sunday August 14

Date Posted: August 9, 2011

Although this is not the final Interclub event it is the "Alpe d’Huez" stage of the series.

Successful completion of two laps up the Niagara escarpment is guaranteed to bring a sense of both relief and accomplishment to all.

Remember, these events are ability handicapped just like our club events, so everyone competes on an equal basis – and everyone is free to participate in the customary post-race whining about the handicaps.

Thanks to our Race Secretary who is planning to run the race (because it is NECC’s turn to do so) and is willing to forgo riding, because he does not yet feel able to float up the hill (and BTW, Phil has now prepared the points table to date for the Club series - see Results on the website). Thanks also to Geoff Smith, the Epping Elf, who has been volunteered to be Phil’s little helper.

New TT Rules and Other Meanderings

Date Posted: August 4, 2011

After an emergency meeting of the NECC executive that occupied much valuable time today, it has been unanimously agreed that the outcome of last night’s 15k TT Chumpionship shall stand and moreover will become an annual event known as:

The More or Less 15km Individual Time and Distance Chumpionship

The rules are exceedingly simple:
1. There shall be no turn marshal
2. Race as far as you want then do a kirksturn
3. Fastest time wins

Moreover a special trophy will be awarded to the winner, henceforth to be known as the Captain Kirk Memorial Trophy

RESULTS ARE POSTED.

And in other news:
1. 15k Individual TT Championship will be the last currently scheduled TT, August 30, Kennedy Road at 6:30pm (note the time change)
2. There may be an additional TT on Tuesday September 6 on a new course (more details later)
3. Club race #4 Beeton, this Saturday August 6, 10:00am. A challenging course for those prepared to be Beaten at Beeton. And if we are all nice to him and do not mention the W word, maybe Phil will give us a points-to-date table, so the race for series champion can start in earnest.
4. Note the change for the Club RR Championship for the Percy Shropshire Memorial Trophy (Bradford North/South course 10:00am), which will be held this year on a Sunday, August 28.

Report on the 2011 TOUR de SPEED

Date Posted: June 21, 2011

The 5th annual Tour de Speed race was an amazing success with a field of 86 riders, almost 40% more than previous years. Based on the comments received after the race from riders, smiling parents and in e-mails, the kids had a great time too. Many of our young Eagles had podium finishes in their individual events and in the Omnium; final results are posted on the Youth Page. We hope to have photos in the next week or two.

Preparation for race day starts months in advance, but 90 percent of that is administrative. The real effort started just after 7:00 am (Yes Ed Veal, there are two 7 oclocks) when the first volunteers arrived with brooms and blowers in hand ready to sweep the corners. By 7:30, the dust was flying, by 8:00 the Lindberg family was setting up registration, the tents were going up, start/finish lines were being repainted, the parking lot was being staked off, coffee was brewing (very important), the prize table was being set-up and banners and flags were being hung. And sometime around here, Maria Moreau hopped in her truck, shovel in hand, and gamely drove off to remove some sort of road kill from the course. Call her if you want more details, I dont.

By 8:30 riders and families began to arrive, they were closely followed by the St. John Ambulance, York Region Police, the OCA officials, the Commissaires and the Timer. Traffic wardens kicked into high gear looking for room for over 100 cars (somebody counted them), traffic cones were now being set-up on Warden, tomatoes were being sliced, riders were being registered, coffee was being sold and about a hundred other little details that the amazing volunteers just looked after without being told or asked to do so. By 9:00, the joint was jumping and we were running out of room. Kirk Douglas made the first of 2 (or was it 3?) runs to Keswick for more supplies. The marshals started to head for their respective points on the track and we were ready to roll.

The races started exactly on time at 9:30. In three hours, we ran eight TTs and eight RRs. The competition was intense and the riders determined. We had one DNF, three cases of road rash, one sprained ankle and one rider MIA during a TT but later found. It seems that while "in the zone", he rode right by a marshal and a police car with flashing lights and then made his way an extra seven kilometres to Mount Albert Side Road before returning to the original route. He then competed in the RR!

Our race could not be run without the help of sponsors, and I think it important that the members of the Newmarket Eagles acknowledge these sponsors by visiting their establishments and giving them the opportunity to earn your business. Make sure you identify yourself as a Newmarket Eagle, thank them for sponsoring our event and let them know their sponsorship is what brought you to them. Our sponsors are as follows:

ATTENTION TIME TRIAL PARTICIPANTS

Date Posted: June 6, 2011

If you have done a TT this year and are not on the volunteer list, on the Calendar page of the website, please let me know which dates in the remainder of the calendar you are available to be listed as an alternate.

Our policy for 'Out And Back' TT’s requires a marshal at the turn for the TT to be run (see below). If no one turns up or steps forward to marshal we will have no option but to cancel the TT, assuredly to the dismay of all present and waiting to race.

Also we need marshals for Saturday’s Two Up TT (June 11). Please let me know and/or show up if you are willing to help.

Thanks,
Andrew

If you do Eagles Time Trials or have done so in the past, you REALLY NEED to read about the new rules for NECC Time Trials - and remember Time Trials are starting ONE WEEK FROM TODAY (see Calendar/Time Trials here).

These rules were agreed to at the November 2010 Newmarket Eagles AGM (when most of you were absent!) and were prompted by a serious accident that occurred in a TT run by another OCA-affiliated club that was a result of not following rules such as these.

The responsibilities and obligations of both riders and turn marshals have been clarified. These procedures are being implemented for the safety of all.

For riders - note that you will be disqualified (i.e. no time will be given) if you fail to observe these rules.

For marshals - note that a turn marshal is essential for the TT to proceed and therefore everyone needs to check the volunteer schedule on the website and either turn up or find an alternate.

These 'Out and Back' rules apply on three of our courses: Penville; Bradford; and Kennedy, and will be enforced graciously but firmly.

Please carefully study them and also see the full version of the rules for all NECC events ('Practices for Group Rides, Time Trials, and Pursuits') on the Membership page of the website (see membership page here).

And if you think all this attention to risk management is over the top, please read the following link which discusses a 20 million dollar lawsuit recently launched against another Ontario cycling club (see Hamilton Spectator article here).

This is why we are continually reinforcing safety rules for both time trials and pursuits, with sign-in sheets, displays of the rules and pre-event reminders by yours truly – yes, it is certainly about safety but it’s also about liability.

Andrew

'Out and Back' Time Trial Rules (January 2011)

1. Some time trials are run on a loop course while others use an “out and back” format which requires a U-turn at the half way point. Be aware of the traffic around you and turn safely - You MUST make a shoulder check before turning.

2. If a volunteer turn marshal is not available for an “out and back” time trial, the event will not be run on that occasion. (Note - this means that everyone has to check the schedule to find out when they are marshaling).

3. To warn of the approaching turn point, a cone will be placed on the side of the road by the turn marshal, approximately 200-300 meters before the turn. (Note – this means the turn marshal will have to drive to the turn. Also, marshals will be given a safety vest to wear and are politely requested not to steal them).

4. The turn marshal is there for guidance only. The turn marshal will stand at the side of the roadway, adjacent to the turn point, which is marked on the road.(Note - the turn marshal may place a second cone at the turn point on the opposite side of the road to where they are standing)

5. The marshal will RAISE A HAND if he/she can SEE vehicles behind you or coming towards you but ultimately, you must determine when you can safely turn.(Note: this means the turn marshal needs to scan the road for traffic in both directions).

6. The marshal is NOT there to control traffic or to provide any other instructions to the riders but you MUST stop if a marshal gives that instruction. (Note: the marshal is there to mark the turn and to warn of possible danger, not to guarantee that it is safe to turn - that is the riders responsibility).

7. Turn marshals will watch for failure to shoulder check before the turn and will inform the timekeeper if you do not. Failure to shoulder check will result in loss of your time for the event.

8. Once you have crossed the finish line do not re-cross it – if you do you risk losing your time for the event.

REPORTING AGGRESSIVE DRIVERS TO “ROAD WATCH”

Date Posted: May 16, 2011

One of our members has recently used the following website to report an aggressive driver incident: www.roadwatch.ca

The service and website is maintained by Road Watch, a not for profit corporation, with headquarters in Caledon.

It is not necessary that an accident or collision have occurred. It can be used to report aggressive or abusive behaviour by a driver, provided you get the licence plate number. We should consider using this service whenever there are incidents that justify its use.

Watch for further news of the outcome of our first report under this program.

This will be attached to the Membership Page in the right side column.

CLUB RACE No.2 LINDSAY IS RESCHEDULED

Date Posted: May 6, 2011

The Lindsay club event original scheduled for that day will be postponed to allow maximum participation in Ride All Day on June 4. It will be rescheduled for June 25, the day before the Beeton Interclub. This will now be a STAGE RACE with a special award (the LBCO*) for the lowest (i.e. highest place - you know what I mean) aggregate finishing position in the Lindsay and Beeton events.

*Lindsay Beeton Champion of Ontario

The May 29th InterClub Race No2 location has been finalized

Date Posted: May 6, 2011

The new 'Moonstone' race will start at the Mount St.Louis Moonstone ski area (same as the old Moonstone races did). The course is slightly different to reduce the total amount of climbing. Unfortunately there is still one climb per lap. The rest of the course will allow for some uninterupted group cahsing. We will also start the race at the top of the hill, and end it on the lower slopes. A new course map is attached to the InterClub calendar.

thanks to Brien Ross from Mountainview Cycling Club

DO NOT BE CONFUSED - this weekend's InterClub event (Race No.1 May 8) is at the ORO course

NEWMARKET EAGLES at the TRACK - Part 2

Date Posted: April 26, 2011

On April 16th Bob Spencer and Tim Dayfoot went to the Velodrome for a recreational ride. It was raining quite heavily, and with the snow mixed in with the rain, it was a perfect day to ride indoors. We rode for about an hour and a half averaging 32 km/hr. This was the first hard ride this year for me and my legs were sore for three days afterwards. It was fantastic, I wish the Velodrome were closer to Newmarket. We hope to get another session in before winter ends.

HELL OF THE NORTH - report by Chris Raynor

Date Posted: April 26, 2011

April 24, 2011
Start Time: 9:00am
Weather: +4 degrees and sunny
Bike: Cyclocross (could be done on a road bike with 25’s, many did; I would use mtn bike pedals and shoes)

The Hell of the North is an event in Ontario with a long history; started by Mike Barry Sr. and his Randonneuring friends many moons ago.  I am grateful to Ed Veal and Real Deal Racing for bringing this great event back to life.  Approximately 75 riders lined up at the start of the 2011 Hell of the North, a mix of incredibly fast racers and others set for the adventure of the event.  Keith Columbus and I representing the Newmarket Eagles were in the group set for the adventure!  We rolled out with a short neutral start. It continued at a nice quick pace for the first 10km, the hill at Herald and Kennedy seemed to separate the men from the boys and the race was on.  We rode north on Kennedy over the TT course and then turned onto our first dirt section.  Lots of mud and large puddles for approximately 1 km made it challenging but exciting as well.  Some rode and others walked, but all made it through.  We broke out onto the road again and flew north for quite some time before turning south again onto rail trail.  The trail was in good shape and dry with not much water which made the riding fast.  Finally! The end of the rail trail section and we were riding into Zephyr and we were on the Sandford race course.

The weather had started to warm up at this point as well and it had become a beautiful day for a race.  South through Sandford to O’Brein and then into a quick section of the Durham forest and out onto the 3rd.  South to Webb and we were almost home.  The last two sections were the toughest; some rocky and bumpy trail that was challenging in the last few kms of the event after the legs were cooked and you just wanted to finish.

We finished the last section of trail and came out into a subdivision, rolled down a small hill to the 9th and knew that we were on the way home.  We could see Musselman Lake and sense that we would be off our bikes shortly.  A quick hammer on the pedals beside the lake, around some twists and turns, and we pushed it up one more short and steep incline to the finish.

+13 degrees and sunny
Approximately 1:00pm
Sun burnt thighs and cheeks

This was a great event put on by Ed Veal and his crew at Real Deal racing.  The Cedar Beach Pavilion is an excellent venue with tons of parking and washrooms.  Lots of food and beverage provided at the start and finish.  Rapha and La Bicicletta sponsored the event with a table full of draw prizes that were randomly drawn for participants, Keith and I both won stuff along with many others.

I know that I will be doing the Hell of the North again, and I hope to see more of the Newmarket Eagles out supporting this great event in their own backyard next year.  If you don’t want to ride, the volunteers were treated very well and are always greatly appreciated by all race organizers.  They even got first pick of the prize table!

I look forward to seeing a show of force from the Newmarket Eagles out next year at this fabulous event!

Chris Raynor

THE THURSDAY NIGHT RIDE IS RETURNING - April 21 - WITH A NEW ROUTE

Date Posted: April 18, 2011

Yes, I know it's a long message but it's crammed with important information, so it's mandatory reading and there will be a test.

Although weather does not look great at this point, the Thursday Night Ride will in theory resume this week - Thursday April 21.
This club ride is registered on our OCA Affiliation form and is subject to our Membership, Insurance and Participation Policy (see the website).

This is a fast paced training ride but it is designed so that riders of varying ability levels can enjoy participating:
1. The route is the same from week to week. This means that people can join the ride en route.
2. The route incorporates a loop so that those who get dropped have an opportunity to re-join the ride. Depending on the month, we do between 1 and 4 loops, so be aware of the amount of daylight remaining and have lights with you.
3. It seems advisable to no longer use Warden Ave because of the increased traffic levels during commuting hours (measured at 160 vehicles per hour going north and 32 per hour going south).
4. The PROPOSED NEW ROUTE is: EAST on Mulock, NORTH on McCowan, WEST on Queensville, NORTH on Kennedy, EAST on Holborn, SOUTH on McCowan and then repeat the Queensville-Kennedy-Holborn-McCowan loop until exhausted or day light fails - and in case it does, be sure to have lights with you.

For those who need to drive to a meeting point, the usual parking spot is on the street at 1133 Kingdale Rd Newmarket (lots of space on the street)* (*Note that returning to Kingdale, off Mulock, can be tricky because Mulock is 4 lanes. An alternative is to turn north on Harry Walker Pkwy before crossing Mulock).

Faster riders leave this parking point at 6:30 PM, SHARP. Slower riders leave at 6:20 PM SHARP and expect to be caught by the fast group while heading north on McCowan. They then try to hang on to the fast guys before re-grouping on the loop (sounds more complicated than it is).

REMEMBER: • NO MATTER WHERE YOU JOIN THE RIDE, EVERYONE NEEDS TO HAVE A MEMBERSHIP CARD.
• IT’S GOOD TO RIDE RAPIDLY BUT IT MUST BE RESPONSIBLY.
• THE RIDE MAY INVOLVE A ROTATING PACELINE (if in doubt, watch this video: (safe paceline riding)
• THE RECENT GROUP RIDING ADVISORY SHOULD BE PONDERED AND ASSIMILATED (see below).

RIDE SAFETY - TIME FOR REFLECTION

• The apparent safety of riding as a "tight" double file group is just that - apparent - and is no protection from the actions of a rogue driver.
• All GROUPS need to have a process for establishing when they should be in single file - for example: on winding roads; roads with disappeared shoulders; roads with limited visibility on hills; where there are double yellow lines; etc.
EVERYONE in the group needs to STEP UP, SPEAK OUT and be responsible for the group's behaviour.
• Those at the front need to TAKE RESPONSIBILITY for calling SINGLE-UP when road conditions dictate and BREAKING UP THE GROUP when it is too long for the road conditions (or even pulling to the side, if traffic is being obstructed).
• Those behind need to FOLLOW the instructions of the lead rider.
• Those at the back need to warn of vehicles that cannot get past and CALL FOR A SINGLE-UP when needed.
• EVERYONE in the group needs to CALL THE MESSAGES UP THE LINE  and EVERYONE needs to move over in an orderly fashion.
• Those at the back need to be aware of riders being dropped, crashed or with a mechanical.
• ROTATIONS should be SINGLE (i.e. the passing pair of riders should not ride between the two front riders).

LEARN TO RIDE/RACE CLINIC FOR BOYS AND GIRLS 9–16yrs - Starting Monday May 9, 2011

Date Posted: April 14, 2011

This 12 week course will start at 6:30pm on Monday May 9 under the leadership of Ed Veal – 2010 Ontario Road Cycling Champion. See the attached flyer (PDF)

The first 6 weeks will be in the parking lot at  St Elizabeth Seaton Church, 17995 Leslie St, Newmarket.

Kids will learn bike handling skills through a variety of fun drills in the parking lot. They will also participate in time trials on a nearby industrial street and in the second 6 weeks of the course they will practice group riding on quiet rural roads under close supervision.

If you have kids, or know of kids, who would be interested and need any more information, contact Ed Veal at: real.deal@rogers.com

The registration form can be found on the right side of the YOUTH PAGE OF THE WEBSITE – just follow the instructions (carefully!) for completion and submission.

SUNDAY RIDES

Date Posted: April 9, 2011

Hi:

Sunday Rides can officially start this Sunday, April 10, 2011, at 9:30 am despite what is written on the Sunday Page. It will get updated soon - check back often. It seems that there is interest in starting now as opposed to waiting until the month of May. Same start location as on Saturday.

The Sunday Rides are paced a bit differently than most other group rides: We go as fast as the slowest rider and we DON'T pressure the slowest rider to go faster.

If you are interested in riding tomorrow, then send Victor an email (see Contact Us page). Otherwise, he'll stay at home and watch Paris-Roubaix live on www.cycling.tv, but he'd rather go for a ride and watch it later "On Demand".

We will also have some cool Centuries - See "CALENDAR" - "SUNDAY MORNING RIDES" page for some planned rides.

NEWMARKET EAGLES at the TRACK

Date Posted: March 28, 2011

On March 12th five Eagles took the Level 1 course at the Forest City Velodrome in London. Maria Moreau with her son Ramden, Cameron and Gavin Browne, and Dean Robertson over came their apprehensions, and had a great time learning how to ride the boards. They learned a lot of skills riding on a tight track, without brakes, in traffic, and all agreed they became better riders. The coaching was excellent and nobody came to grief. Everyone enjoyed it so much that they want to return to the Velodrome.

TRACK RACING 2011 - Part 1

Date Posted: March 10, 2011

Your anxious to get riding after perusing the Bike Show but the weather isn't cooperating? Join Bob Spencer and troop for some indoor riding at the Forest City Velodrome this Saturday, March 12...

Hi fellow Eagles,

On Saturday March 12 I have reserved some spots for the Learn to Ride the Track session. It is a 2 hour session starting at noon. The coaching is excellent and the skills you learn will make you a better rider.

The track is looking for junior talent to develop them into champions. If you are a junior and can maintain a 30 km/hr pace the track is for you. There is also a skills session with coaching at 3:00 PM to practice what you learn. We usually go to Boston Pizza for dinner.

It takes about 2.5 hours to get to London, and I would organize the convoy and can take 3 riders in my car. If you are interested contact Bob Spencer by e-mail at spencer11@rogers.com.

Do not be intimidated by the photos of the banking, the laws of physics rule. The track's website is: forestcityvelodrome.ca and has lots of good information.

If you go to our CALENDAR Page, under TRACK RACING you will find directions and a map.

Regards, Bob Spencer

TORONTO BIKE SHOW REPORT

Date Posted: March 9, 2011

On behalf of the Youth Committee and the Tour de Speed, I would like to say a special thanks to all those who volunteered their time at the NECC booth at this year's Toronto Bike Show. Hopefully I won't miss anybody's name here: Andrew Darke, Kirk Douglas (!!), Andrew Rae, Chris Raynor, Aiden Raynor, Dan O'Halloran, John Leslie, Victor Tolgyessy, Jenna Tuero, Megan Tuero, Mike Murphy, Bob Spencer, Brian Brama, Torstan Brama, Roxanna Berlan and Keith Columbus.

We successfully sold all 400 raffle tickets for a Raleigh road bike to support our youth efforts. It seems we have some natural born hustlers in our midst! Hopefully we raised awareness of our youth programs as well.

We drew the ticket at the end of the day Sunday and the lucky winner was Leslie Mahon, ticket number 072. She was very surprised and happy when we called her with the news.

RINARD’S RETURN - BIKE ENGINEERING Part 2 - Wednesday March 9

Date Posted: February 15, 2011

If you liked Watt I - “Where Does the Power Go”, you’ll love Watt II - “How to reduce the Power Required”.

Or, if you prefer to quibble about the meaning of the title: how to go faster with the meagre amount of power you can generate given your current lamentable state of fitness.

We learned at Watt I about the aero drag created by the machine, now, for Watt II - what about the 80% of power consumption due to the biomass trying to propel the machine.

Presenter as before will be our Erudite Entertaining Engineer, Damon Rinard
Race Engineer for Garmin-Cervelo Team and Senior Advanced R & D Engineer at Vroomen-White Design

NOW read even more carefully:

We will also be using this meeting as a fund raiser in support of Damon’s wife, Jane, who is doing the PMH Ride to Conquer Cancer this year.
As some of you know, in 2010 Jane become a cancer survivor. She received much of her treatment at Princess Margaret Hospital and is committed to "giving back" to this great facility. Knowing her riding ability she is probably intending to try for a Toronto - Niagara Falls record.

You have 3 ways to support her:

1.  Pledge support at this link: conquercancer.ca/goto/jrinard
2.  Print off and complete the donation sheet in this link and bring it to the meeting.  printable donation form (PDF)
3.  Make a cash donation at the meeting - in exchange for one of Jane’s famous homemade tasty treats.
4.  None of the above is not a choice

Time and location will be the same: 7:00 PM, NEWMARKET PUBLIC LIBRARY (438 Park Ave Newmarket, ON. L3Y 1W1. There is some parking near the library or you can also park where we meet for Saturday and Sunday rides – walk up to Main St and crossover to Park Ave).

Don’t forget it’s on a WEDNESDAY

Andrew

BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND – Wednesday March 9

Date Posted: February 7, 2011

After a Triple E* performance this week, Damon** Rinard*** will give a follow-up talk on a different bike engineering topic on March 9 (note that it’s a Wednesday)

*Erudite Entertaining Engineer (a rare commodity in this club’s experience)

**Race Engineer for Garmin-Cervelo Team and Senior Advanced R & D Engineer at Vroomen-White Design

***I learned that it was appropriately (if arbitrarily) pronounced with a long “I” (as in RYE N ARD - also happens to be a popular beverage in rural areas of his home state of Wisconsin)

More details of his next topic will be announced soon.
Time and location will be the same: 7:00 PM, NEWMARKET PUBLIC LIBRARY (438 Park Ave Newmarket, ON. L3Y 1W1. There is some parking near the library or you can also park where we meet for Saturday and Sunday rides, walk up to Main St, and crossover to Park Ave).

YOU CAN APPLY FOR EAGLES MEMBERSHIP NOW

Date Posted: January 25, 2011

Your 2011 Membership Card is essential to your participation in the cornucopia of events planned for the rapidly approaching cycling season. To obtain it you need to follow:

A SIMPLE 11 STEP PROCESS (that some of you will undoubtedly fail to follow)

1.  The 2011 Membership Forms are up on the website - strangely enough you will find them on the Membership page.
2.  You need to complete BOTH the NECC membership form AND the OCA waiver form.
3.  You can fill them in on the screen and then print them off (plural emphasized).
4.  Read the instructions they contain, before attempting the actual completion of the forms.
5.  The forms cannot be submitted on-line or brought to any event (race, group ride, etc...) and must be mailed-in as per instructions on the Membership Form. As one alternative, you may deposit your application in Victor's mailbox outside his front door. Give him a call if you need to make alternate delivery arrangements - he can be most welcoming and pleasant when bike racing is the main topic of conversation.
6.  If you do not complete the form on the screen, you need to complete it LEGIBLY, using your best penmanship.
7.  You must complete ALL FIELDS including the NEW SECTIONS on Emergency Contacts and Volunteering.
8.  If you do not fully and legibly complete the forms they will not be processed by Veektor the Terrible, our Membersheep Coordinateur. Depending on his disposition on any given day, he may pursue you for corrections, or may ignore you until you prompt him with a terse question such as:  “where’s my XXXXxxx membership card?”
9.  Submit your cheque in the CORRECT $AMOUNT payable to Newmarket Eagles Cycling Club (i.e. just as written here).
10.  If you have an OCA (UCI) race licence and want to claim a discounted membership fee, you MUST include a photocopy of your licence.
11. If you do not yet have your OCA licence you need to submit the FULL membership fee ($50) and when you get your licence, send a photocopy of it to Veektor the Terrible, whereupon he may be agreeable to sending you a refund of the insurance portion, for a small commission.

No questions will be entertained - this has been submitted for standard comprehension testing by an independent evaluation company. My best wishes to all for a successful, error-free and expeditious application process.

BARRIE BASEBALL CROSS RACE

Date Posted: November 29, 2010

Sunday morning, November 21st, was cold, too cold to get my mountain bike rolling, but not too cold for some eager beaver psycho-crossers at the 4th annual Barrie Cyclo-Cross Race, re-dubbed the "Baseball Cross”, due to its new home at the Barrie Sports Complex. Complete with heated washrooms, a hot food stand and a bonfire, it winds its way around ball diamonds and soccer fields. I noticed a few Newmarket Eagles enjoying the circuit, here are some of them...

SHARE THE ROAD COMMENTS

Date Posted: November 17, 2010

The Share the Road Coalition ShareTheRoad.ca is making substantial progress in its efforts to ensure safety for cyclists on the road.

I recently participated in a meeting that they organized, in preparation for a strategic plan review. In the “News Archives” on this page you will find a copy of the discussion document, entitled Eagles comments on Share The Road, which I prepared in advance of this meeting. There will be an opportunity to discuss this further at the Eagles’ Annual General meeting on Tuesday November 30.

IT MAY BE MIND-NUMBING BUT...

Date Posted: November 9, 2010

IT’S NECESSARY - ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING: TUESDAY NOVEMBER 30, 2010, 7:00 PM, NEWMARKET PUBLIC LIBRARY

Library located at 438 Park Ave Newmarket, ON. L3Y 1W1. There is some parking near the library or you can also park where we meet for Saturday and Sunday rides – walk up to Main St and crossover to Park Ave)

And... notwithstanding this weekend’s confusion, Saturday rides will now start at 9:30am until the Saturday following the start of DST, so you cannot claim you are too tired to attend.

After all the AGM is, surprisingly, only held once a year. Can you afford to miss this rare opportunity for the intellectual stimulation and excitement provided by:

- A review of the Strategic Plan for the Club for the next 25 years
- The opportunity to comment on the SWOT analysis commissioned from an internationally acclaimed management consulting company
- The moments of anticipation as the ballots cast for the 2011 executive slate are counted.
- The annual whining and snivelling as the handicap formulas for the upcoming season are re-calculated.
AND
- all attendees will receive a FREE TICKET to our winter meetings (Wednesdays: February 2 and March 2):

Thanks to Mike Tuero for the photos!

Looks like everyone had a great time! We stuck together and only, slightly, maybe stretched-out a bit when there were some reflective-rumblings about the route profile. But, we did see a lot of colourful trees and had a terrific lunch at The Mt Albert Pub!

See you again next year,

Dave (BTW: unfortunately, Victor did find his bike after lunch.)

If you want to see what the route was like, then follow this link:

NECC CLOTHING UPDATE

Date Posted: July 23, 2010

Hello fellow Eagles,

Next week I will be ordering jerseys, bibs, and regular shorts. If you want to reserve an item let me know.

At the 40 km TT I will be bringing a sample jacket and a vest for comparison. The jacket has detachable sleeves and a 2 direction zipper that makes it possible to loosen it from the bottom. The jacket will cost 0 and the vest 0. The jacket is the Louis Garneau Morpho model which is a XC ski and cycling jacket. I think its a great deal and is more cost effective than the vest. I will bring the jacket and vest to the remaining TT's and races for your perusal.

Regards, Bob Spencer

NOTE: Inventory list AND Louis Garneau sizing chart on THE STORE page

VASEY INTERCLUB - July 18, 2010

Date Posted: July 19, 2010

Hosted by Mountain View Cycling Club (Midland)
Over cast day, 27C, light winds from the west
Course: 19km x 4 laps for a total of 76km of mixed featured terrain. No big climbs but your legs were tired by the end, as it should be!

Start times
Group 1 10am
Group 2 10:09
Group 3 10:14
Group 4 10:18
Group 5 10:22

End of the First lap, Group 1 was together and working well, Group 2 pulled in 1-1/2 min, Group 3 closed the gap against 2 by over 2min. Group 4 narrowed the gap to 3 by 45sec and added 30sec to Group 5 which was already down to three riders.

End of Second lap, Group 1 was together but the work was getting done by less people, Group 2 was caught by 3 just as they were climbing up to the finish line tailing off some of the weaker climbers of group 2 the distance to Group 1 was at 3min. 4 was still moving along nicely and still had 2mins to make up against 3. Group 5 was now moving in the right direction pulling back to within 3:40 to Group 4.

End of Third lap, Group 1 was caught by 2-3 on Moonstone rd West. Passing the finish line Group 4 was just back 1:15ish, Group 5 was 2min till catching 4 - It was going to be a tight finish.

Last lap, Group 4 caught 1-2-3 somewhere around the turn on to Scarlett line. With 5 still chasing. At the line there was about 15 riders with 10 of them fighting for position (A timers nightmare thanks guys). Group 5 finished about 30 sec behind - oh so close.

I think the time handy caps were good for 3,4,5 but 1 and 2 needed a bit more, a good day of racing. No one went down and lots of stories to be told. Hope everyone had fun and see you all at Epping on Aug 15.

Tim Bourrie

Thanks for the race report Tim, RESULTS ARE POSTED

PARKING FOR SATURDAY MORNING RIDES

Date Posted: July 15, 2010

The usual access roads to the usual parking spot are closed for the downtown Newmarket revitalisation project.

The only open road leading to the parking area is the narrow one way laneway that runs off Main St just north of Botsford.

Allow extra time to find this needle in the downtown haystack.

Departure is easier. You can leave the parking area in the normal way to access Timothy St.

TOUR OF SPEED RESULTS POSTED

Date Posted: June 28, 2010

The RESULTS of the 2010 TOUR OF SPEED are posted on the YOUTH page in the right column.

MESSAGE FROM DEAN ROBERTSON, “Mr Tour of Speed”

Date Posted: June 23, 2010

The 2010 Tour of Speed is over. This year, we had 58 amazing riders, the weather was picture perfect and everything happened the way it was supposed to. Nobody is more shocked about that than me!

I am sending a great big thank-you to everybody that contributed, helped, donated, cheered and made me look good on Saturday. Thank-you, Thank-You, THANK YOU!

There are some great photos available on-line, including several of a particularly handsome club President-For-Life, who looks like he is enjoying himself immensely. Please make sure you pass these links on to parents of riders who are not members of the NECC.

TOUR DE SPEED on PICASA

TOUR DE SPEED on SMUGMUG

TOUR DE SPEED on FLICKR

If you have pictures you would like to share, please send them to me at deanrobertson@rogers.com. I am particularly looking for photos of the marshalling tents on Warden at Catering and at Boag, the TT turn-around and the cones on Warden. I'd like them for planning purposes for next year....WHAT?... NEXT YEAR?... Yup, coming soon, the 2011 Tour of Speed on June 18, 2011. Volunteers wanted!!

Dean Robertson

5 REASONS NOT TO DO THE INTERCLUB RACE NEXT SUNDAY JUNE 27 AT BEETON

Date Posted: June 21, 2010

1. You are exhausted from volunteering at yesterday’s Tour de Speed youth races. If this applies to you then thanks on behalf of the Club for your time and effort in making this such a successful event, involving over 60 kids from all over Ontario.

2.You are Dean Robertson and are too busy preparing to coordinate next year’s Tour de Speed 2011. If this is you, then a big thank you from the Club for a great job organizing yesterday’s event.

3.You do not understand what an “Interclub” is. If so, please refer to the comprehensive explanation on the News page of the website (www.newmarketeagles.com) under the heading - “Club and Interclub Events are Imminent” and for further details, see the Calendar page of the website.

4.You do not own a broom and feel guilty in riding without sweeping a corner of the course before the event. If so...well, it’s obvious...

5.You have a passion for the products of former microbreweries and plan to do the Tour de Creemore instead. This charity ride is recommended by 2 of our members. It is 100km and involves some good climbs, including scenic caves road. For details see: TOUR DE CREEMORE

Andrew

... AND LEST YOU BE CONFUSED, THE FOLLOWING EVENTS ARE IMMINENT:

Date Posted: June 7, 2010

1. The next Interclub Event will break with tradition and will be held on a SATURDAY (next weekend - June 12)  at Lafontaine (see Calendar page of website). There will be bonus points for those who can find the starting point unaided.

2. Two weeks plus one day after Lafontaine (SUNDAY, June 27), we (i.e. YOU) are hosting the next Interclub Event at Beeton. Bring your BROOM AS WELL AS YOUR BIKE

3. The TT this week (June 8) is at Kennedy Road. The following week (June 15) it will be BACK TO BRADFORD. Paving is completed and about 3.3% of the course will be really fast.

4. Saturday June 19 we (i.e. YOU) are hosting the TOUR DE SPEED for kids. Let Dean Robertson know (deanrobertson@rogers.com) you will be there to help. Details of location etc are on the website (yes, strangely enough, on the Youth Page).

5. Finally, do not be mislead by reports of errant handicapping at yesterday’s Lindsay club race, the winner richly deserved the victory.

Andrew

A BEAUTIFUL EVENING FOR A TT

Date Posted: June 2, 2010

The weather was great last night and 19 riders took advantage as they raced against the clock on the Penville TT course. Results are posted.

ALSO... Interclub Race number 2 is fast approaching, SATURDAY JUNE 12, and we finally have a map for the Penetang course. CLICK HERE or go to the caledar page for the Interclub races.

ALSO ALSO don't forget about this Saturday, June 5, Club Race no. 2 in LINDSAY.

EAGLES CLEAN UP AT KENNEDY ROAD

Date Posted: May 31, 2010

Thanks to all, especially this year’s new members, for breaking the record for the number of volunteers at the Kennedy Road, Adopt-a-Road clean-up today.

42 Eagles more or less arrived on time and more or less followed the instructions and filled a goodly number of garbage bags.

With this level of support we should consider a proposal for collecting more garbage, that has come up from time to time:
If anyone has an opinion for OR against alternating (Fall and Spring) between the section of Kennedy Rd we did today and the next 2 km stretch north, please let me know.

MISCELLANEOUS UPDATES

1. I was interviewed by the Era Banner this week about cycling needs in York Region – see the next couple of editions to check if they printed anything.
2. Next Tuesday (June 1) our weekly Time Trial is on our shortest course. If you have never done a TT, this is a good one to try (see the Calendar page for the map).
3. Next Saturday (June 5) is the second pursuit of the season at Lindsay. It’s worth the trip to Lindsay - a nice course with few hills and conveniently located for a visit to the famous Little Britain bakeshop on the way home. If you have never done a pursuit, read the blurb (Club and Interclub..) on the News Page of the website and give it a try (also see the map and blurb on the Calendar Page).
4. For those who will not be at the Lindsay event, the indefatigable XL Prez, Tony Osborne, will be coordinating the Saturday ride(s) from the usual place.
5. Don’t forget to let Dean Robertson know (deanrobertson@rogers.com) that you are available to help at the Tour de Speed Youth Race in 3 weeks time (Saturday June 19). This is our major organizational effort of the season and we need LOTS of helpers to make this event a success.

Andrew

READ, MARK, LEARN AND INWARDLY DIGEST

Date Posted: May 17, 2010

1. Because of construction on the 5th sideroad, north of Hwy 88, we will not be able to use the Bradford course for TT’s or RR’s for the foreseeable future.

2. Tuesday night TT’s listed for Bradford, starting next Tuesday (May 18), until further notice, will be held on the Sandford pursuit course (see map on Website). This is a course with a challenging hill – just like Bradford. Be aware that there are stop signs on this course at the intersection of Ashworth Road and Concession 3 (the first turn) and Hwy 39 and concession 3 (just south of Zephyr), where due caution is needed.

3. All TT volunteer responsibilities remain the same – only the location has changed.

4. For unrelated reasons, the 40km 2-up TT Championship will now be held on Saturday August 28. This has the double advantage that you will be in better shape by then, plus it frees-up your schedule for May 29, to participate in the Kennedy Road Adopt a Road Clean-Up.

5. The Percy Shropshire Memorial RR Championship (Sat Aug 21) will be held on the Beeton course (unless Bradford construction is completed by then).

Mark your calendars!
Andrew

TOUR OF SPEED ROAD RACE FOR KIDS

Date Posted: April 25, 2010

The 4th annual Tour of Speed road race for young riders sponsored by the Newmarket Eagles, is on June 19th, and we need lots of volunteers for a wide variety of responsibilities in the weeks immediately prior and on the day of the race. Some members have approached me already with offers and for that I am grateful.

In no particular order and not ignoring previous offers of assistance, we need volunteers to help with:

- Acquiring food: burgers, hot dogs, buns, soft drinks, water, coffee, apples, banana, watermelon and whatever. Also required are condiments, cups, napkins, cream, sugar and more whatever. Donations of the above items would be great, anybody with connections in the grocery or food service industry would be a welcome addition.

- Donation of propane BBQs and hopefully transportation of same to and from the event.

- Cooking and preparation of some or all of the above items. Transportation of materials and supplies to and from the event including propane BBQs.

- Sweeping the course prior to the event. Parts of the route have gravel on it and this needs to be cleared.

- Set-up of signs prior to the event and additional signage and pylons on the day of the event.

- Clean-up after would be nice.

- Marshalling of the course during the event.

- Making sure volunteers on the course are fed, watered and relieved during the event. Training and monitoring of new marshals may also be required.

- Transportation of whatever doesn't fit into my car.

- Prizes and Draws.

Transportations of whatever doesn't fit into my wife's car.

- Assembly of various sponsor awnings, tents and route signage.

- Whatever else I'm going to realize I left off this list or somebody is going to remind of.

- Cheering.

- Clean-up.

If you have industry connections, and I know some of you do, and are able to arrange cycling related prizes or inclusions for the participant grab bag (i.e. swag), we would gladly accept any and all donations.

If you have a high school student at home who requires Community Service hours for their degree, then hours volunteered at the Tour of Speed qualifies for this requirement (I checked!).

CLUB AND INTERCLUB EVENTS ARE IMMINENT

Date Posted: April 21, 2010

First Interclub – Sunday May 2, at Oro (see CALENDAR page)
First Club – Saturday May 8, at Bradford South (see CALENDAR PAGE)

The events in both of the these series are open to and can be enjoyed by all, because they are ability-handicapped -  usually in a way that ensures that elite riders never win.
This format is technically called an Australian Pursuit – (no, not Aussie Rules) – and is designed to bring out the best in all of us, in terms of both collaboration and deviousness.

There are medals for the winner of the Club events and a trophy for the overall winner – no, not at the race – at the Annual Awards Banquet.
There are prizes (loot) for the overall winner and the next 15-20 participants in the Interclub Series.

It would be nice if the corners could be swept by more than the “faithful few”. Bring a broom, get out of bed a little earlier and choose a corner to sweep.

Remember: For both these series – NO MEMBERSHIP CARD – NO RIDE

And:
don’t forget your approved post-race wear, the distinctive 25th Anniversary Club T-shirt, to be worn at the post event debriefing and assignment of blame, at the nearest coffee shop

AND ONCE AGAIN: No Card = No Compete; No T-shirt = No Trophy; No Broom = No Bonus Points.

THE THURSDAY NIGHT RIDE IS RETURNING

Date Posted: April 19, 2010

Having consulted detailed astronomical charts, the Farmer’s Almanac, tide levels in the Bay of Fundy and the latest predictions for volcanic ash, it has been concluded that this coming Thursday (April 23) may be an auspicious date for the start of the Thursday night ride.

This club ride is registered on our OCA Affiliation form and it is subject to our Membership, Insurance and Participation Policy (see the website).

This is a fast paced training ride but it is designed so that riders of varying ability levels can enjoy participating:
1. The route is the same from week to week. This means that people can join the ride en route.
2. The route incorporates a loop so that those who get dropped have an opportunity to rejoin the ride. Depending on the month, we do between 1 and 4 loops, so be aware of the amount of daylight remaining.
3. The route is east on Mulock, north on Warden, east on Holborn, south on Kennedy, west on Queensville and then repeat the Warden-Holborn-McCowan-Queensville loop until exhausted or day light fails – and in case it does be sure to have lights with you.

For those who need to drive to a meeting point, the usual parking spot is on the street at 1133 Kingdale Rd Newmarket (lots of space on the street)*

Faster riders leave this parking point at 6:30 PM, SHARP. Slower riders leave at 6:20 PM SHARP and expect to be caught by the fast group while heading north on Warden. We then try to hang on to the fast guys before re-grouping on the loop (sounds more complicated than it is).

REMEMBER:
- NO MATTER WHERE YOU JOIN THE RIDE, EVERYONE NEEDS TO HAVE A MEMBERSHIP CARD.
- IT’S GOOD TO RIDE RAPIDLY BUT IT MUST BE RESPONSIBLY.

(*Note that returning to Kingdale, off Mulock, can be tricky because Mulock is 4 lanes. An alternative is to turn north on Harry Walker Pkwy before crossing Mulock).

Sunday Morning Rides Begin Tomorrow, April 18

Date Posted: April 17, 2010

It looks like there is interest in starting the Sunday rides before May.

We will meet this Sunday at the usual spot (Community Centre parking lot in downtown Newmarket, Water and Main Sts) at 9:30 am (nine-thirty eh-em).

The pace is conversationally slow and the distances are short, but some egos may fly-off-the-handle; however, we'll always re-group. NO ONE GETS DROPPED FOR LONG.

A schedule of our occasional Century rides will be posted soon on the Sunday page...

Make sure you're on Victor's NECC Membership List if you don't yet have your membership card - if you're not sure, just give him a call. You know what he'll say if you're not a member in good standing!

MEMBERSHIP NEWS - April 2010 Edition, Vol. 1

Date Posted: March 30, 2010

Hi All:

Since the first TT is next Tuesday, I just thought I’d give you all the Riot Act regarding what you need to do in order to be a member in good-standing with the Newmarket Eagles Cycling Club so that you can participate in any official ride or race.

The last thing I want to do is refuse anyone the privilege of entering any of our published events because you haven’t shown your membership card to a ride or race official.

So, I highly encourage you to mail your membership application in to me asap via Canada Post or hand-deliver directly to my house. You need to submit:

1. The Waiver

2. The Newmarket Eagles Cycling Club 2010 Membership Form

3. Cash or cheque for the right amount

4. And, if you have a race license and want the discount, then please attach a photocopy of your OCA/UCI license.

The Waiver and NECC Membership Form are on the website (look to the left – click MEMBERSHIP)

If you’re in a rush, then give me a call and I’ll be more than happy to accommodate you as best as I can.

I WILL NOT ACCEPT ANY APPLICATIONS AT ANY EVENT – This policy has been in place for quite some time and has the full backing of the Club’s Executive. I need to process your application in accordance with our rules so that your name gets added to our Official NECC Membership List that I then provide to all the race and ride coordinators as well as the OCA. Once all this is done, we have our asses covered.

So, bring your NECC Membership Card with you AT ALL TIMES!! However, if you've submitted all your paperwork but don’t yet have your membership card, you can still ride so long as you CALL ME FIRST TO CONFIRM YOU’RE ON OUR NECC MEMBERSHIP LIST.

Finally, if you do show-up to an event and I haven’t received your membership application, I or any ride or race official will ask you NOT to participate until we get confirmation that you are a member in good standing. And, if you do get asked not to participate, then please go-off on your own ride without causing any embarrassing outbursts. I’ve had to deal with one outburst this season and I will not tolerate another.

That’s it…

Victor

EAGLES CELEBRATE 25 YRS OF CYCLING EXCELLENCE

Date Posted: February 16, 2010

Or at least a few excellent moments over the past quarter century.

A small group of enthusiasts started the Club in 1985, based out of Eagle Cycles, which at that time was Tony Osborne’s store on Eagle St. Together with XL Prez, there were 5 other founding members, one of whom was current Eagle, Gord Clarke.

Now you have the opportunity to celebrate this proud history by wearing the limited edition 25th anniversary T shirt CLICK HERE for IMAGE.

Available in Men’s and Women’s sizes (S, M, L, XL, XXL) for just 15 dollars and Youth Sizes a mere 10 bucks.

They will be available in 1-2 weeks so contact Bob Spencer to get your name on the list before the stock runs out.

And NO, you do not have a choice of colour and YES, it is required apparel at all club events.

We have a message from Eleanor McMahon, founder of Share the Road. It is attached to the right hand column entitled "FEB 2010 UPDATE"

This tragic story has an Olympic connection and reminds us again to appreciate the efforts of the Share the Road coalition to make our roads safer for cyclists.

MEMBERSHIP 2010 APPLY NOW

Date Posted: February 4, 2010

YOU CAN APPLY FOR YOUR 2010 MEMEBERSHIP NOW.
Your 2010 Membership Card is essential to your participation in the cornucopia of events planned for the rapidly approaching cycling season.
To obtain it you need to follow:

A SIMPLE 10 STEP PROCESS (that some of you are already destined to mess up)

1. The 2010 Membership Forms are up on the website – strangely enough you will find them on the Membership page.
2. You need to complete BOTH the NECC membership form AND the OCA waiver form.
3. Print them off (plural emphasized).
4. Read the instructions they contain, before attempting the actual completion of the forms.
5. The forms cannot be submitted on-line.
6. The NECC membership form is not currently fillable on the screen, so you need to complete it LEGIBLY, using your best penmanship.
7. If you do not complete the forms legibly (ALL FIELDS) the forms will not be processed by Veektor the Terrible, our Membersheep Coordinateur. Depending on his disposition on any given day, he may pursue you for corrections, or may ignore you until you prompt him with a terse question such as: “where’s my ____ membership card?”
8. Submit your cheque in the CORRECT DOLLAR AMOUNT payable to Newmarket Eagles Cycling Club (i.e. just as written here).
9. If you have an OCA (UCI) race licence and want to claim a discounted membership fee, you MUST include a photocopy of your licence.
10. If you do not yet have your OCA licence you need to submit the FULL membership fee (47.00) and when you get your licence, send a photocopy of it to Veektor the Terrible, whereupon he may be agreeable to sending you a refund of the insurance portion, for a small commission.

No questions will be entertained – this has been submitted for standard comprehension testing by an independent evaluation company.
My best wishes to all for a successful, error-free and expeditious application process.

Andrew
