DUNDALK INTERCLUB RESULTS

Date Posted: May 5/08

Typical Dundalk weather greeted the 39 riders who came out for the first Interclub of the season. The 20-25kph NW wind made the back-side of the course quite a treat if one was not with a group.

First place went to Tony Abramavicius, second was Neil Hendry and rounding out the top three was Big John.

Thanks to the spectators who stepped up to do the timekeeping.

Full results are posted.

ANOTHER CHANCE TO SUPPORT A FELLOW EAGLE

Date Posted: May 5/08

As it was reported earlier, Keith Columbus is going to be riding 200 kms in the Ride to Conquer Cancer on June 20-22. You can sponsor Keith by going to his webpage at www.conquercancer.ca. Your donations to Keith's ride will support Princess Margaret Hospital.

Joining Keith in an effort to support Princess Margaret Hospital is another Eagle, Tim Dayfoot. Tim will be doing a Sprint Triathlon at Lake Joseph on July 5 as a part of Joe's Team. Joe's Team is inspired by Joe Finley, who decided to take up triathlons in mid-life even though he was engaged in a fight against cancer.

You can read more about Tim's excitement about doing this triathlon on his Personal webpage which is found at www.joesteam.ca, by clicking on the word 'Pledge' and then entering the last name, Dayfoot. The other Dayfoot that you will see listed is Tim's daughter, Sophia, who will be trying desperately to keep up with her athletic father.

All donations to Keith's and Tim's campaigns are very much appreciated.

FIRST CLUB PURSUIT SATURDAY MAY 10

Date Posted: May 5/08

For those of you who missed the opportunity to race under beautiful conditions at the Dundalk Interclub yesterday (shame on you), don't forget the first Club Pursuit of the season is next weekend at the Bradford South course. The agenda for this event will be:

1. Ceremonial brochure waving (a clue: you received it with your membership card)
- read it carefully before the race.
- it tells you how to behave safely during the race and how to avoid disqualification.
- bring it with you, remember, no brochure no ride.

2. Address by the President (who has also agreed to model the new presidential club clothing, weather permitting).

3. Group assignment by Harper the Horrendous (and Heavier) Handicapper.

4. Start: 10:00am.

5. Finsh if possible.

6. Coffee at Pete's donuts (see the beautiful map on the website, courtesy of Tolgyessy Cartographics, which disclaims any commercial affiliation with said donut chain).

MEMBERS WANTED FOR TEAM ICARUS AT INTERCLUB RACES

Date Posted: April 30/08

The Interclub race series is challenging and fun. You get to ride some interesting courses with some fine people from Barrie and Collingwood and environs. It uses the same handicapped pursuit format as our club races. This series is NOT JUST FOR THE FAST GUYS. I need more riders to join me and a few other regulars on the ICARUS* team in Groups 1and 2. The first race is next weekend at 10:00 AM, Sunday May 4, in the Dundalk Highlands. Trust me, it's a flat course. Check the location on the website and get yourself up north - that's an order.

A COLD NIGHT IN BEETON

Date Posted: April 29/08

Results are up for the 9 riders that braved the cold wind at the Beeton course. Rob Nishman was the sole rider to break 40 minutes. 2nd and 3rd was a tight race between Ken McDermid and Richard Hall. Richard had Ken by 1 second on the first lap but Ken had more left in the tank and at the end was 6 seconds better. Thanks to "always there" Al Norley and volunteer of the month Elmore Brenton for assisting AND sweeping the corners. Welcome back Elmore!
Next week it's back to the flats at Kennedy Rd. See you there.

Volunteers needed for the TOUR OF SPEED youth bicycle race - Saturday, June 14th

SHARPEN THE TALONS and DRILL THAT SKILL

Date Posted: April 23/08

Calling all club racers. We all know how fast you are making right hand turns and the occasional left every Tuesday. But can you turn 90 degrees into a wall on ride away? Retrieve your water bottle without dismounting. Elbow your friends while looking backwards and get away it. Probably not. Therefore you many need to improve your bike skills by reserving your place for this May 3rd from 12:00 to 3:00 by contacting Ann or Big John at (905) 473-6159 See this link for more skills that will be covered

Cheers, Michael Murphy

BRADFORD TT RESULTS

Date Posted: April 22/08

Another glorious evening for riding a bicycle! 19 riders started, 18 finished due to one faulty crankarm just 2 kms shy of the finish line. Top spots were clocked by Rob Nishman, Chris Bradbury, and Richard Hall. Way to go boys. And again, thanks to our dedicated volunteers!
Full results are posted. See you next week at Beeton.

GET BACK ON THAT HORSE SOON GLEN

Date Posted: April 21/08

Glen McCrone is recovering from a nasty crash that occurred at the end of the Calabogie Road Race on Sunday. He is currently in the Ottawa Civic Hospital. Early reports of a punctured lung, broken shoulder, and the usual road rash, he will need a new Jersey (if allowed to ride again). It sounds like his bike suffered a worse fate (Ouchie award?).

Glen trained last year to ride the Mt Washington Hill Climb in New Hampshire but due to severe weather the race was cancelled. He is booked to do it again this August. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

HIDDEN UPDATES

Date Posted: April 17/08

PENVILLE TT RESULTS

Date Posted: April 15/08

Twenty riders took the start line on this beauty of an evening. The weather is cooperating so far this spring. Top spots were taken by Ed Veal and James MacDonald. Dave Pierce and Chris Ivey placed third and fourth riding their road bikes. Are they saving their Time Machines for when they get more fit? It was good to see some younger riders out there tonight, way to go boys! And a big thanks to our volunteers. Full results are posted.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS - THURSDAY NIGHT RIDE and ADOPT-A-ROAD

Date Posted: April 4/08

It appears that spring arrived today. This means three things:

1. The first Time Trial is upon us next Tuesday April 8 (Kennnedy Road). Don't forget to check the volunteer schedule on the website. Anyone who misses their turn will be penalised 30 secs on their next TT and moved up two groups in the next Pursuit.

2. We are close to the official start of that venerable institution, the Thursday Night Ride, on May 1. This allows ample time for everyone to get their memberships (i.e. insurance) completed, which is particularly important this year because of the very poor state of Warden between Vivian and Davis, so no heroics on this section please.

3. The Adopt-A-Road clean up of Kennedy Road will likely be on May 24. This very day I marked the sections of road for each team to clean according to last year's successfull strategic plan. So all we need is for YOU to turn up and give an hour of your time to this worthy community initiative.

Have you read the ride practices brochure you received with your membership yet, there will be a test!

MEMBERSHIP REMINDER (this is the friendly one)

Date Posted: March 12/08

First of all, my thanks to Elmore and to everyone else that have helped me get up-and-running as Membership Coordinator. Elmore did the job for the past 3 years and Margaret did it for many years before him.

Please ensure that you mail all required documents to me as a complete package, especially if you are submitting a race license and expect a reduced membership fee. If I don't get all the paperwork at once, then I set aside your application until all documents arrive. Once I'm satisfied that all your paperwork has been submitted, only then will I mail you your new membership card. I may give you a reminder over the phone or through email about your delinquent document, but I may forget to do so. It's up to you to make sure that I have all the paperwork.

Alternatively, if you are waiting for your race license and want your Eagles Membership Card pronto, then submit your application (membership form plus waiver) with a cheque for the full amount ($45 for a single over 18 years of age) and I will mail you your card. Once I get a photocopy of your race license, I will then cut you a cheque for the difference. No problemo.

My turn-around time, once I receive your application, is about a day. In fact, I received 21 applications at last night's meeting and all the cards have already been mailed out. So don't panic.

So, as a reminder, here is what I need from you before I send out your membership card:

1. 2008 Membership Form (LEGIBLE – otherwise, it causes delays because I have to track you down to confirm information. I will make a reasonable attempt to get a hold of you, but if I can’t, then you better email me if you don’t see your card in about 2 weeks after you mailed your application)

2. Insurance Waiver (please sign on the correct line & not on the Parental Consent line if you are over 18 years of age – if you don’t, then you will need to re-submit an new waiver. I will contact you if there is a problem)

3. Photo copy of Race License (if applicable)

4. Cheque (preferred over cash)

It's that simple.

By the way, if you do happen to see Elmore on the road, why don’t you roll down your window and say to him, something like, "Hey Bud! When you're done your ride, can I buy you a coffee?" Same goes for Margaret.

See you on the road,

Victor

LITTLE JOHN RESPONDS

Date Posted: February 11/08

In answer to your question:

The time was 3 hours, 32 minutes, and 54 seconds. The record was set in 1954. Paul and I did 1 hour 10 minute rides, Jimmy a 1 hour 12 minute ride. I road the last 5 miles on a flat tyre (silly British spelling here). The record stood for 6 years. How's that for a good memory?

LJ

I'd say that's a very good memory. I think the speed works out to approx. 41 kph, for nearly 50 kms, I'm impressed.

NECC NAME THAT RIDER CONTEST

Date Posted: Feb 08/08

The winner of the NAME THAT RIDER contest was Gord Clarke. correctly identifying (when he was asked!) the young chap, in the centre of the photo CLICK HERE, as John Blunsdon.

It was 1954 when 'Little John' Blunsdon and team mates Jimmy Love (1948 Olympic Track Team member) and Paul Baulch had just set the British National 30 Mile TT record. I wonder if Little John remembers their time?

You can also see some of the history of these guys on the Willesdon CC website.
(see 1954) http://www.willesdencyclingclub.co.uk/about/history.htm

I believe the President is springing for a free coffee for Gord. I still say the lad on the left looks a lot like Andrew Darke.

VELODROME 2008 - PART 2

Date Posted: Jan 25/08

On Saturday Bob Spencer, Steve Quenneville, Tim Dayfoot, and Victor Tolgyessy went to the Forest City Velodrome in London. We did the recreational ride from 1 to 3 PM. It's always an exilerating experience riding on the shortest track in the world with 24 other riders. Our bike control was good, and nobody crashed out. The pace was quick and after hour of riding in circles we were getting fatigued. If you ever want to learn advanced bike handling skills and riding in a tight pack, this is the place to do it. Afterwords we dined at the local Boston Pizza. The weather was good for driving and a good time was had by all. We plan to go to the track on an average of once a month. The next recreational session is Saturday March 1st. If you want to learn how to ride the track contact me at: spencer11@rogers.com

SINGLE LAP TRACK RECORD FALLS

Date Posted: Jan 16/08

Nineteen year old Joe Veloce from Fonthill, Ontario smashed the 18 month old track record for the single lap of 8.06 seconds (set by 1982 World Champion Gord Singleton) by riding 7.85 seconds or 63.287 kph at the 138m Forest City Velodrome in London.

Three other FCV track records fell... for more information go to http://www.forestcityvelodrome.ca/

VELODROME 2008 - PART 1

Date Posted: Jan 2/08

Hi everyone, I am proposing that the Eagles go for a recreational ride on Jan 19th. The session time is 1 to 3. Only those who have completed level 2 at the velodrome can ride the recreational sessions. Later at 7 pm there is a race and some of us are planning to stay and watch it. Let me know if you are interested by next week. If you want to learn how to ride the boards please let me know. If I get 4 responses I'll set up a session and escort you to the track.

NECC CLEANS UP ON AWARDS

Date Posted: Dec 4/07

The Canadian Cycling Association, at this year's AGM in Calgary this weekend, announced the Eagles as its "Builder of the Year"
see http:www.canadiancyclist.com And check Dec. 1 CCA AGM Day 1
Admittedly it would have been nice if someone from the CCA had told us about this, but we are grateful for the recognition. Those of you, of which there are many (87.4%), who missed our own AGM last week may also not know that the Ontario Cycling Association awarded the Eagles their award for "Road Contributor of the Year" at its recent Cycling Celebration event. Both awards undoubtedly reflect the efforts of the club, and especially its youth committee, in promoting youth cycling and organizing the first OCA youth race this past June. Mark Summers was in attendance at the OCA awards event and accepted the award on behalf of the club.

HELP CONQUERCANCER.CA

Date Posted: Nov 23/07

Hello Fellow Eagle:

On June 20-22, 2008, I'll be participating in a 2-day major cycling event called "The Ride to Conquer Cancer" benefiting The Princess Margaret.

I'll be cycling over 200 kilometres that weekend, from Toronto to Niagara Falls, with a lot of other Riders. All the proceeds will go to The Princess Margaret to support cancer research, treatment, and services. The Princess Margaret is Canada's leading comprehensive cancer research centre so every dollar I raise will directly impact the lives of cancer patients across Canada.

The ride is dedicated to making a big impact, so I've agreed to raise at least $2,500. I need your help to do that. Could you please consider making a donation of any amount? Visit my personal page, or go to conquercancer.ca and please take the time to support me.

Thank you in advance for your generosity!

Sincerely, Keith Columbus

RICHARD AND NIMI CONQUER ISRAEL

Date Posted: Nov 22/07

The following report from Richard and Nimi Nurgitz on their recently completed 500km charity ride in Israel. They would like to thank all the club members who supported this worthwhile initiative in aid of the Alyn Rehab hospital in Israel.

Israel Bike Ride

Five days of cycling in glorious sunshine and warm weather, while you guys had cold rainy stuff - what could be better. The Alyn charity bike ride was a great success. Almost five hundred enthusiastic riders from 12 different countries rode in 4 different venues for five days from the top of Israel to Jerusalem and raised almost 3 million dollars for a most worthwhile cause.

I rode the Challenge ride with 80 others in which we had many long arduous climbs and thrilling descents. Naomi (Nimi) did the regular road ride with about 250 riders. Whereas we are used to riding almost non-stop for the 100km distance, that was not the case here as there was a significant range of riders (less so in my group) so there were always several stops so we could regroup. We had a police escort and a pace car all the time, mainly for traffic control. Security was not an issue. Our rides started at 7 am and often didn’t finish until 3 PM. Hard to keep the muscles from getting cold and cramping but what a way to see the country and enjoy smooth asphalt and empty roads.

I learned not to be a bike snob. Most of us are guilty of classifying real roadies as lean mean body types on high end bikes. My hat is off to all those weekend riders on entry level bikes and heavy hybrids who endured the five days of hills to raise money for the hospital. Everyone I saw whether they plodded along slowly or walked the tough climbs deserves recognition for their efforts.

Most of all, I was emotionally touched by those children I saw at the hospital. During the tough long climbs I thought about those kids and their disabilities and realized that where my discomforts and hard efforts were only temporary, these kids have to endure their hardships all their lives. Fortunately, I saw that they receive amazing therapy, love and care from an incredibly dedicated staff of doctors, nurses, physiotherapists and others.

VELODROME

Date Posted: Nov 8/07

The next Level 2 Velodrome session is scheduled for Saturday December 15th. Only those who have completed Level 1 can attend. After this we can ride the velodrome without supervision.

If you wish to do a beginners Level 1 session let me know and I'll put something together. This is an excellent way to improve your bike handling skills.

The management at the track asked that we read the track etiquette page on their web site before we go to the track. As we don't ride there too often; it is a good idea to refresh our knowledge for everyone's safety.

They also said we are a great club with skilled riders. They like our support of the track, and wonder when we will be competing.

Contact me at: spencer11@rogers.com for reservations or information.
